The UK's smart motorways are catching more than 1,000 speeding motorists per week.

According to police figures, over 52,000 tickets were issued on 11 smart motorway sections in 2015.

This is a huge increase compared the same pre-smart stretches in 2010-11 which only clocked 2,000 speeding drivers.

A spokesman for the Department for Transport commented: "Smart motorways smooth traffic flow and cut congestion for millions of motorists, with evidence from trials showing they are just as safe as regular motorways."

He added: "Enforcement is a matter for the police and it is clear that speeding costs lives. However, we have been clear for a number of years that speed cameras should not be used to generate revenue."

So why does the headline say "1000 a Day"?

This just shows how many speeders we have now.

The only motorway I use, bi-monthly, is the M40 and if I do 70 I'm being constantly overtaken.

Apologies, error corrected.

That's odd, I altered the main file, I just assumed it would copy over from the home page. Thanks for pointing it out, done now.

They also inforce random 40 mph speed limits at 2:30 in the morning when there is not another car in sight in either direction!

There have been rumours that 'Smart Motorway' cameras are in some places still in action even when a traffic controlling speed is not set. That seems to me to be real sneaky. Does anyone know the truth of this?

Does it not sound reasonable that they would have them set to 70 odd MPH when NSL is in force?

Some areas ARE enforcing national (70mph) limits when there is no variable limit in operation and some areas are not enforcing. I did see one flash without a limit set on M25 two nights ago - somewhere in the region of junction 22 I think.

So its not about improving safety then. So what are smart motorways for? No, dont tell me, that will bee the 52000 speeding tickets.

Am I missing something? Why is that 'sneaky'??

If there's no set limit the limit is 70 ... go over it and you're liable to be prosecuted.
