Had an update from Garmin today...
"Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
I am happy to help with your query.
Your case has been investigated locally in our European offices, and has since been shared with our US department to resolve the issue.
Unfortunately, the solution has not been found yet, and you will be notified as soon as a solution is found.
Apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued patience.
If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know. Alternatively you can search for a solution here: http://www.garmin.co.uk/support"
So they haven't got a clue either. |

I'm surprised I haven't been told to switch it off, wait for 5 minutes and switch it back on again. That seems to be the extent of most technical support these days. |

I did however I'm sure thousands of people have been affected by this and I don't see why we should let Garmin off the hook by sorting it ourselves.
I'm sure many people wouldn't have a clue what to do so it's down to Garmin tech support to come up with a solution for the masses. |

Checking maps already installed on the device you come to an entry called;
"Basemap", and this is referenced as;
"Worldwide Autoroute DEM Basemap, NR 5.01" dated 08 / 2011 "courtesy of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration / National Ocean Service 2011"
Tried the NOAA / NOS website and discovered it was Garmin who embeds this file under licence. Can anyone interested take this further?
Just wonder if this has anything to do with the disappearance of the Europe DEM files from Garmin devices that use it? |

No. Pretty much every Garmin, even their fitness devices, come with the basemap. Your GPS or satnav will default to that if no other map is loaded/selected for the area you're in. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I have not had any reply from Garmin yet.
However the message from Garmin "Unfortunately, the solution has not been found yet..." proves what I have felt for some time - either Garmin does not actually read the support ticket or they just do not understand plain English. This is not the first time I have seen a pre-fabricated answer from Garmin that had little to do with the question.
The solution, my dear Garmin, is to reinstall the DEM file.
Its that simple.
As to why the file was deleted, that can be investigated by GE's product team by the time of the next update - even though those of us in IT could probably hazard a reason - a global delete instruction (if that was what was done) will always bring heartbreak.

And why you should always back up before an install

So, what IS the difference betwen the deleted Europe DEM file and the Basemap DEM file NR 5.01 that's in every Garmin device? |

Ooops
Didn't read your post correctly and missed the DEM map, just read basemap!
If it's the DEM map then that's what is required.
And to clarify, the basemap is on every device, the DEM file only in a few that use/need the DEM map. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Can the devices that don't come with the DEM display (2569) it if you bung it on your device? |
