PostPosted: Tue Jul 12, 2016 6:12 pm    Post subject: 2599 & Traffic Popup Window - Dangerous Behavior Reply with quote

The behaviour of my traffic popup window seems to be downright dangerous and I can't believe that this is how its supposed to behave.

Scenario - Something happens further on the route to affect traffic flow
and a window pops up on the RHS to tell me something like ...
Traffic On Route, 5 mins of delay added and I'm (still) on the fastest route.

Now I'd expect that after a few seconds it doesn't so you know have to completely distract yourself from driving and try and hit the X that is provided at the top left of the popup. Hit slightly to the left and you affect the map display window, slightly to the right and you get more info on the traffic situation. You've got to reach a long way to do this (on my civic anyway) and at full stretch its b....y difficult.
I've been into settings expecting to find a setting to modify this behaviour but can't find one. There's not even a voice command that cancels it!
About a dozen other folks have been in the car and seen this behaviour and all agree its crazy. After a bit of eratic driving they usually suggest (in a panicked voice) that they do it.
I've searched the forum but can't locate anything about this so before I have a real go at Garmin can anyone confirm that this behaviour is "normal"

Well that's how it works, I just leave it there. Why are you so keen to get rid of it?

I wondered that as well. But I suppose it falls into the 'because I want to' area, and is a pain to do. I suspect that what the OP wants, and something that sounds eminently sensible, is a user adjustable timeout so that it goes away of its own accord.
If you wanted it there all the time, you would have it displayed all the time.
However, I suspect that the OP's ire would be better directed at Garmin, although whether they would take any notice is doubtful.

Agreed. Should he want to

I didn't respond when I first saw this because I wasn't sure of the user option set.

From what I understand the traffic sidebar is hidden, user preference, but when traffic conditions change it pops up and stays there needing a user action to remove it.

I can sympathise as I've owned both the 8G and 9G Civic and the dash and windscreen are a long way away. I've got my unit slightly closer by using the Garmin dash mount that does work in the Civic on the split shelf.

I leave the sidebar showing all the time because I'm happy with the reduced map width to permanently show me traffic conditiins, it's the vertical map limit that is of most use most of the time.

Doesn't help the OP though.

Yes its simply that its told me what it needs to and now it should go away and let me have my full screen back.
In my past career as a software engineer with quite a few spent as a user interface developer (GUI) one guiding priciple was to keep a screen uncluttered. If I'd have implemented the Garmim's behaviour I'd have had some very unhappy users.
Interestingly I've had occasion when the popup has gone away on its own.
Has anyone else had this?

It depends I think on whether you always have a sidebar displayed. I have trip data showing as default. If it's replaced by the traffic one it reverts once if the traffic is no longer applicable, this could be because it's cleared or because I've now passed the problem.

I don't use my Garmin 2599 for navigation as my Civic has the built in Nav. I therefore don't get my whole journey traffic, just what's up ahead so having it visible to confirm yeah or nay is OK for me.

I agree with the OP. It's a pain to have to click the 'x' to get it to go.

On the Garmin startup screen I see ...

Do not attempt to enter route information or adjust this device while driving etc, etc.

However the device demands that if I want to get rid of that screen hogging popup I have to target the X with very little tolerance or I get the wrong action and have to try again and again.

If thats not a contradiction and poor design then I'm a monkeys uncle.

(Anyone got any peanuts going, I'm peckish.)

I've submitted a request to Garmin using the above link. If a lot of people do it, maybe they will listen

Good man! I'll give it a day or two then do the same.
Come on you other guys - ask for a user configurable option then we can all be safe and happy.

My guess is that Garmin decided that if traffic appears on your route it would permanently display it until the traffic clears.

They provided a way of closing it but didn't take into account the latest auto designs with steeply raked screens.

My vote would be an additional 'voice command'

That is a very valid point!
