A million pounds worth of speed cameras on just one road are inoperative.

The average speed cameras on the A127 in Essex were installed by the local council seven years ago, but have never been switched on.

The cameras are on a 70mph stretch between the Alton Garden Centre and the Noak Bridge junction.

A Freedom of Information request to Essex Police enquiring as to how many motorists had been caught speeding, revealed that there was no data available as the cameras are and have always been inoperative.

The authorities say that the cameras still act as a deterrent and warn that they could be activated any moment without notice. The road is regularly patrolled by road safety officers.

It is thought that the cameras will be switched on once the dual carriageway's 50mph section is extend.

Nigel Le Gresley, county councillor for Wickford Crouch commented: "Unless there’s a particular problem, why switch them on? In the future, they might make that stretch 50mph as well, which I think would be a good idea."

Essex County Council said: "All the safety cameras on the A127 have helped to significantly reduce the numbers of serious collisions since they were installed in 2009. They act as a deterrent, preventing people from driving at illegal and dangerous speeds. In addition to cameras, police also carry out patrols in both marked and unmarked vehicles."

Then why the **** spend a million pounds of hard-working taxpayers' money if there's no problem? It's diabolical how our elected councils squander our money on useless vanity/publicity schemes.

Discussing Average Speed Cameras, what's going on on the M20/A20 on the direction towards Dover?
There is something like 10 miles of average speed cameras with the maximum speed set to 40mph. This has been going on for more than 6 months.
Went on it today about lunch time. There was light traffic, which was crawling along.
There are some major road works as you enter Dover, but this is miles outside the town. Surely they are not trying to slow down the traffic from so far out; there is a notice, something about a traffic investigation.... but nothing else.
IF operation Stack was in force, it would be understandable, but this is ridiculous.

I believe these are to control traffic into the port. Shame the foreign HGV just thunder past everyone.

But that's the A20. The thread is about the A127.

As it happens the A127 that runs by Wickford and South Woodham Ferrers into London is or was a notorious accident black spot road. I'm not surprised they installed cameras but to not activate them is a bad decision.

The junction of the A127 and the M25 used to feature almost weekly on the traffic accident pages.

Then someone should be strung up for having them installed without a 'particular problem' in the first place. What a waste of our money. Presumably, they haven't switched them on because it will cost more to run them than the revenue they may make. Or perhaps running costs come out of a different bucket than the bucket for the revenue, and having wasted money on installation, they don't want to waste any more of our money as they won't get it back. How very fiscally prudent of them.
