What is the "lamp post speed limit" that you refer to? On urban roads, generally, street lighting means 30MPH unless it is indicated otherwise. See here
It's also pretty clearly stated in the highway code.
As tip, never, never ever, rely on speed limits indicated by a satnav. What happens if they chenged the speed limit yesterday? You're caught! |

I got done doing 34 in a 30 somewhere in darkest Wales. It all depends on the police force but the lowest limit is 10% + 0. |

From where did you get that information? The lowest limit is the speed limit +0%. The ACPO RECOMMENDATION (not the law) was +10% + 2MPH. Of course, 'they' may chose to ignore the recommendation in order to raise maximum funds. |

Not surprised to see Admiral / Elephant (same outfit) named. They will jack up premiums even if you have only suffered a minor no fault, fully settled claim. |

Hi,
From recent personal experience, I can assure you that the PNC does keep a record of offences whether you opt for fixed penalty, or a course. |

I am pretty sure the PNC keeps a record of fine/course as they're not going to keep giving you courses to attend for repeat offenders.
Insurance companies that load peoples insurance after admitting attending a speed awareness course obviously think the course has no effect on peoples attitudes to speeding. What does that say about the standard of courses? Properly run courses should be of benefit to drivers imho. Those who have attended the course should be better drivers, more speed aware, than those who have not. That, in effect, should warrant a discount and not an increase in premiums. Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule but they're likely to get a fine for their next offence and be penalised accordingly through increased premiums. |

Interesting to see that you obviously only post those comments in support of your "opinion." For example: You again state, slightly rephrased "Here are the facts surrounding the insurance issue. But a number of insurers have grown wise to this and are now specifically asking if you have attended a speed awareness course and then loading premiums where this is the case. I don't yet have an exhaustive list of which companies do ask but Admiral and Elephant are two who do. If you know of others then post in the thread below." A number? An exhaustive list? I guess you got exhausted of finding 2 companies? Yes apparently you have verified, although not said how, that TWO companies do this. Gee, how many insurers are there in GB, a few hundred? Apparently you either didn't bother to find that out or it is of such a significant number that it would make your "TWO" look insignificant. And then you ask your readers to add any companies they know. If you want your "reporting" to have any integrity, most "reporters" AND Police Officers tend to gather their facts before they make their assumptions or opinions.
But when you state "My distaste for these courses arises because they are a profit making business with a few select companies making a lot of money." your real integrity in reporting becomes obvious. I guess living in a socialist kingdom causes one such as yourself to have "distaste" for the people who actually own businesses, create jobs and pay peoples salaries. If you have a real job, tell the owners of your business, that employs you of your "distaste." My understanding of your traffic laws is that you only get cited when you actually break the law. And, in most cases you get plenty of visual and verbal warnings that you are driving in an area with speed cameras, etc. So if you are STILL getting tickets in those areas, even with you software add ins, how much attention are you actually paying when YOU are driving? Don't blame your carelessness or ignoring your speed laws and then suffering the legal punishment of same on someone else. How about a little personal responsibility? Or did you give that up for socialism also? |

Wow, you make a vitriolic attack on someone expressing an opinion, albeit based on poor research.
Your statement above is just not true. I and several others have come out in praise of these speed courses. _________________ Tim

so at 36 mph you are bang on the allowance limit, 37 mph you are speeding.
Having said this I do stick to the speed limits as trained.
What do people out there think of this. |
They are quoting the ACPO Guidelines and not entirely correctly - the guidelines state fixed penalties at limit + 10% + 2mph, so you could expect a fixed penalty at 35mph in a 30mph limit. Also, these are just guidelines, and they also state that driving at ANY speed over the limit is an offence and police could prosecute. I also understand that you cannot use the guidelines as a defence. |

There is NO accepted allowable tolerance for speeding.
South Yorkshire constabulary will allow 10% + 3mph. Cheshire constabulary do not.
Wales are even more strict.
Each constabulary can choose to have a discretionary limit if they choose. It is not mandatory for them to do so. |
