A Go Safe speed camera van has attracted the ire of drivers and motorist organisations after a photo was posted on the Speed Camera Spotters North Wales Facebook group.
The camera van, on Llandudno Road in Rhos-On-Sea was hidden in the access to an electricity sub station and its deployment in that location has been called a cynical money making opportunity by Go Safe. Llandudno Road is a 30mph limit and it has attracted frequent criticism for being inappropriate.
Whilst guidelines for mobile camera enforcement staff advise that they should not be"covert" many are suggesting this is just that.

It's only a moneymaker if you are breaking the law !
Looking at the photo this is a residential area so greater than 30 is surely dangerous

So LESS THAN 30 is dangerous!

Yes I don't disagree, but the original purpose of these cameras was supposed to be a deterrent and should therefore be visible. I wonder how many drivers even driving at or under the speed limit panic break after they eventually see this one. Here in North Yorkshire it is not unusual to see camera vans tucked neatly between other vehicles in laybyes. And in these cases they are fund raising not making the roads safer. |

Yes, 2 sides of logic.
1) Better slow down because they hide the vans and when you see them it's too late.
2) Drive as fast as you like but keep your eyes out because they are easily visible.

The car and the telegraph post directly in front of the van would not give it a clear view of oncoming traffic. It could be argued that all the readings are invalid...

| They only need a clear shot of about 1/3of a second, and I doubt to the extreme that "It could be argued that all the readings are invalid..." |

I have absolutely no problem with the principle that we should all be driving at an appropriate speed for both conditions and limits.
What concerns me is that this idiotic operative is blocking the access to an electrical substation. What happens if the electricity company needs to get into there in a hurry for safety reasons, such as needing to turn the power off to avoid danger to, or loss of life?
It duly makes a mockery of the 'Safety Partnership' label. |

I live in a similar sort of 30 mph road, right next to a Primary School, some drivers fly past our house, this happens morning noon and night, it is the most lucrative speed camera location in the county yet still people whizz by at great speed, if the authorities were serious about changing drivers behaviour here or at the location shown in the picture then obvious fixed location speed cameras would be a far more effective solution, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year OR install traffic calming, speed bumps.
On a recent Saturday the motorcycle camera operator informed me that he had 'clicked' a Police Car 'just over 40' and a Lotus overtaking at 67mph, the camera operator was dressed in black leather, his high vis waistcoat was in the open box on the back of his bike and his speed camera sign was on a hinged panel sticking out of the side of his bike, it may have been 9" square but certainly no bigger.
There is far too much emphasis on 'gotcha' and not enough on 'don't be stupid' and I suspect a lot of the very worst offenders simply drive on, safe in the knowledge that they can't be banned or traced because they don't have a licence in the first place and that the car is neither taxed nor insured in their name. |

You wouldn't think it quite so silly if you were a worker currently (pun intended) being electrocuted at 50Hz and had to wait for the numpty to move his van. |
