Average speed cameras, you either love 'em or hate 'em. But whatever your views, you can expect to see many more of them cropping up after a House of Commons Transport Committee called for more widespread use of the technology.

A large number of drivers seem to be oblivious to how these cameras work, drive along any SPECS controlled section of motorway and you'll soon be passed by drivers who seem to think they're either immune or simply have no idea how an average speed camera works.

Whilst they do seem fairer than more traditional speed cameras, after all it's difficult to claim you were caught out when speeding in an average speed camera zone, and ignorance is not a defence, there is a concern that these systems are being deployed with little thought to the safety aspects.

In busy times though you get every lane travelling at the limit so speeders get little chance.

I think this is the best way to go. I'd hope that they can also get cameras that can monitor lane discipline. I'm not so concerned about vehicles undertaking when lanes are congested, more those who cut from lane to lane to try to make progress.

Perhaps those who are undertaken are in the wrong lane and just won't move over no matter what? Supreme Angel

Yes. they are usually Volvos or Mercedes driven by fossils, at 47mph in the 50 zone in the outside lane. They relish their importance.

I think he means YOUNG fossils (y'know, 60-65s) who haven't yet learned how to drive at 49.

I was really thinking of the M25. On the West side when all 6 lanes are moreorless at a stand-still, then suddenly they speed up, there is a lot of lane changing, then we all put the anchors on again for another crawl. But the Hayes Bypass, the Parkway, and the Bath Road are just as prone.

Yeah, the M4 going out of London, all the way to Reading, is a prime example.

The Hayes Bypass is a prime example of bad design. No matter what time of day between 07:00 and 20:00 the section between the Uxbridge road and the Target and Polish memorial is nose to tail with Inrix and Google maps showing them solid red all day.
It's the only north south route into Heathrow, west of the M25, and suffers. During the day this single band of dark red sticks out as the only problem. Even the M25 eases off during the day.

By the end of Summer they are going to reopen Hayes town but that will do very little.
