A newbie question - I am planning to go to France and rent a car. I have a 2699 with European maps. Is it a question of turning the 2699 on in France or do I need to set country etc? I am assuming the speed cameras etc will not work. |

It'll just work. Set units to kms though and be prepared for it to take a but longer than normal first time you use it there to get a satellite lock.
As for speed cameras, Garmins own ones comply with French law so only warn you of 'danger zones' which may or may not have cameras. The PGPSW ones do warn you of caneras but you need to download the French files. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Nope. When you choose the Euro ones there is a check box if you want the French ones included. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I see that there is a tick choice for France / Swiss cameras. Does it mean rest of the countries are automatically included? Also, does this give me the UK ones as well (if I choose to download Europe ones)? |

No. The UK ones are separate as they're in mph and EU is in kph. EU gives you everything apart from French and Swiss, and UK of course. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Last question - why are only French / Swiss left out? |

Both the French and Swiss governments have said that to have SpeedCamera Poi's on your SatNav is illegal. PGPSW are giving you the option to include them in the EU download if you would like to take the chance of not being caught with then. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

The question was not "Why are French and Swiss cameras left out?". It was "Why are ONLY Swiss and French cameras left out?". This implies that the OP thinks there should be more left out. I asked why he thought that. |

No - I wondered why 2 were left out - the answer above - their gov decided it iwas illegal - is what I was looking for. |

Just to add while it's been declared illegal the French police have no power to enforce it, as they're not allowed simply to stop you to examine your satnav. Just in case though I keep my French camera files on the sd card, which can be removed should I be by any chance stopped _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

My experience of speed cameras in France is that:
a) they give you warning of their presence,
b) they are mostly in places you'd expect them to be (bottom of a steep hill, &c.) and
c) they're hard to miss.

Not all ... some are very sneaky! I've seen them tucked behind bridge supports so you don't know they're there until after you've passed them, and many of the ground mounted ones are forward facing so you see them too late.
Equally red light cameras are beginning to increase in numbers, some of those aren't easy to spot either.
I should add for clarity that I don't jump red lights or speed! _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
