This is slightly off topic as the thread is about the new TomTom GO 51 and 61 PNDs with Lifetime World Maps, not smart phone apps.
However before we go back on topic, is Maps.Me an actual SatNav app or just a mobile map?
If you want to use third party POIs on an iPhone TomTom app then the best solution I've found so far is POIViewer, once you have loaded your POIs you don't need a data connection (great for when roaming) you can navigate to a POI, find the nearest, as well as edit/add/delete POIs. The only thing that you can't do is see the POIs on the TomTom map (you can see them on POIViewer map).

Yes and no, it will route you from A to B, and even redirect you, but there are no voice prompts, give it a go. |

Only if you send yourself an email with a virus in it, it's not automatic on opening the email, you have to click the attachment that you send to yourself, you can do it via dropbox as well but I haven't done it that way yet.

My GO1005 died yesterday and I've bought a 5100 for full world lifetime mapping and lifetime Traffic. Yet again another example of what TomTom bring out new is worse than before. i know the 5100 doesn't do custom poi's but can you save 'favourite' locations to it and if so, how many can you store?
i need a unit that i can put my 120 odd customer locations in.

Disclaimer: I've not got one
But, the user manual at http://download.tomtom.com/open/manuals/new_GO/refman/TomTom-EU-RG-en-gb.pdf , page 36, implies that you can upload POI sets in OV2 format.
What I can't find mention of is the ability to get POI alerts, which is what you'd need to use the Speed Cam POI.
Anyone who has one able to comment on either half of that? |

Yes, you cannot upload sound alerts or associated .bmp files. Further, the custom poi files uploaded won't appear in the map view but you can search for them.

For me I am not concerned about whether a sound alert can be uploaded. Will the unit still announce verbally, the name of the POI group as you arrive at the POI? My XL30 will announce 'speed camera' as that is the name of the ov2 file those POIs are in, as well as letting me enter how many metres away it will announce it, a necessity for speed camera alerts but nice for most others as well, to have a warning before getting to the POI location.
Unless the new one will do that, I am not interested in upgrading my unit.

In practice very few I would imagine.
The vast majority of buyers of sat-navs probably arent bothered having 3rd party POIs - TomTom provides them along with speed cameras, a very small number will know about this site.
And then, of course, lots of people who dont want to upgrade because of these limitations keep their old TT devices with their chargeable map updates.
TT, presumably, are after the mass market of sat-navs, not the old specialised market of old.

Lack of 3rd party POI with warning is the sole reason I have not purchased a new model from Tomtom.
I have been hanging on hoping Tomtom would fix this and make their new products as capable as their predecessors, but I guess that's not going to happen. On the one hand they are bleating about not making profits and on the other ignoring a considerable "professional" market who have expressed a desire to have these features.
My 8 year old Go 720 is still going strong, but with a battery life of 5 mins. So I guess I'll bite the bullet and treat it to a new battery.  |
