We announced on 13th September 2004 that Navman have three new products coming out. The Navman iCN635, iCN650 and the iCN510 (the latter of which we will be previewing here).

The iCN510 comes with a PXA255 processor running at 300MHz running Windows Mobile 2003 (Windows CE.NET 4.2) and comes complete with 32mb Ram. Obviously the Navman version has been highly customised (from a Mitac Mio 136) and that shows as soon as you look at the front face, the sleek design and the way the contours hold well, even the buttons look nice especially when lit in blue when pressed.

The stylus pulls out from the right hand side of the unit (when the screen is facing you), you also have a job volume control on the right hand side and a headphone jack socket. The screen is bright. Like the PiN 100, the iCN510 has a flip-up integrated antenna but this runs SiRF XTrac 2 chipset rather than a SiRF IIe/LP chipset, so the iCN510 is running the latest SiRF chipset (albeit pre V3 which is still not available yet in products to the consumer).

A great review, Dave. Gee this is a good site.

One thing, you didn't go into great detail about how good the 510 is on re-routing if you decide to take off (maybe to miss traffic or something). How quick was it at recalculating and getting you to your destination compared to the TTgo?

Also, is there a way of avoiding a roadblock like the TTgo or simply telling it to avoid a particular road like the TT3?

Dying to get my hands on one and try it out.

The new version looks promising especially with it's extended routing options.
Hope the full review shows whether the routing quality has improved greatly as a result from the current version. Exclamation

Re-Routing was pretty fast, I haven't timed it yet. However re-routing does with all packages vary on the length of the route and how far away you are to the destination so this will be a variable.

Roadblocking a particular road isn't possible. Like with the previous iCN range and also SmartST V2 you can avoid a particular area by drawing a square or rectangle over the area, but that's as close as you can get.

I never found the time taken to recalculate that much of a problem even on routes across countries it's the actual route that has always given problems. Even pre-planned routes with the navman software seem to be recalculated while your driving so you don't get routed where you expected to be. It's OK to effectively block areas to skip them but when your doing a completely new route you don't know what to block. Hopefully the new version won't try and take you off motorways and back on again like the earlier versions.
Is there any info on the release of the PPC version ?.

As this is a Pocket PC 2003 device, is it still usable as such? Is it supplied with the usual Office suite or has it been all customised out.
The ability to view and work in landscape mode would be great.
Does it have TMC capability?

No you cannot get to the underlying Operating System, even from a hard reset, as the program is pre-loaded into ROM.

There is no TMC on this product.

If it were to be released would it be likely to be in landscape like the icn or will it need the later version of windows on existing PPC's for this ?
