A speed camera has been rendered unusable by a car that crashed into it. The fixed camera was already inactive, but it looks as if any intentions to reactivate it are now off the table.

Arrangements have been made for the camera's removal from its site A37 at Chilthorne Domer, Somerset.

A spokesperson for Somerset County Council said: "This wasn't an active camera so in line with our agreed policy on speed cameras we have no plans to replace it at the current time."

Hope the motorist wasn't badly hurt in the removal of this cash cow.

That's odd, it's working now OK. Maybe just a glitch.

That's the irony, it was inactive and therefore not attracting cash... as the authorities cannot afford to run some of the cameras.

@ Rob I think your original link was broken because the end part was black and not forming part of the link.

Not the most politically thought through comment from an elected commissioner that I've heard!

Pretty well summed up in the piece by...

<Hugh Bladon, from voluntary lobby group group the Alliance of British Drivers, criticised the idea of making money from speed cameras.
"These cameras are alleged to make roads safer, they are not to make money for the police or government or anyone and to suggest that it is... I'm lost for words," he said.
"It is completely contrary to anything to do with road safety and utterly obnoxious.">

Although I have doubts about the sanity of many of these highly paid Police Commissioners I believe he has floated this idea to highlight and publicise on a national basis the resource issue his force is facing. In that respect it has worked.
