I travel all over Europe and have cameras fitted in both the front and the rear of my car (both of which are visible). Since installing my first one over 4 years ago I've never removed them from view as I use them to keep a watchful eye on my vehicle whilst it's parked.
They’re jet black and fairly discrete so perhaps not highly visible from the outside... or perhaps they’re just not appealing to thieves?
I prefer to use the camera alerts on my TomTom as they're more detailed as you can visually see their location on the map.
Lane and vehicle detection warnings on camera tend to become annoying as you will get frequent false alerts (I’ve switched mine off).
Again... the most important factors for any dashcam are day and night clarity and reliability... any other features are a bonus but you’ll probably end up disabling them.

Nice product but with a glaring omission for me. No battery.
I don't necessarily want to hard wire the power. Nor do I want to have wires dangling and plugging it into a badly positioned (in my car) power socket.
A 1-3 hour battery source should have ideally been added. |

I tend to treat Specs as maximum speed cameras so if I do have to slow down then spending the same time going faster is not an option I would consider.
I tend to set cruise control on motorways, where possible, so I don't drift over or be influenced by tailgaters.

Most dashcams only have small batteries to allow safe closing of the current video file and to retain the date and time. There isn’t much space to house a large battery within these cameras and the weight of a large battery would cause the camera to bounce and move on the mount making the video footage horrible.
Some hobby cameras will allow approximately 45 minutes of recording on the internal battery, but these tend to be units with no screen and GPS like the Mobius etc.
The batteries in dashcams have a hard life as they’re usually exposed to very high and low temperatures and very frequent charging/discharging. This takes a big toll on the batteries lifespan and can kill them within a year or so.
Some people replace the batteries with capacitors (or super capacitors) as they have a very long lifespan, however the downside of capacitors is the time and date will be lost when the capacitor has discharged.

I'm sorry for taking this off topic, but just to drag it back a bit...
I was disappointed to see that they are including the average speed function because I don't see the need for it. I was also disappointed to see that they are including red light cameras.
I was prepared to wait for MaFt's review but since other people are asking questions I'll ask mine. I wonder how configurable the speed camera database will be on this device. For example will it be possible to exclude categories, change warning distances? Will pmobiles be included? |

We've had the RoadHawk HD units since they were available, which is about 2˝ years. I get a piece of black electrician's tape and cover the logo and writing on the front of the unit. Placing the unit at the top of the windscreen just under the rear view mirror tends to give you a "stealth" installation. If you know what to look for then you will see it, but most people have to have it pointed out to them.

The first two vehicles have the sticky pad, the third vehicle uses the RoadHawk suction cup. I leave the RoadHawk attached to the windscreen via the suction cup all the time and never remove it. I prefer the suction cup method as the mount hasn't failed (even in the British summer) although in very hot climates the suction cup may not be the best solution.

I have just received my 05 Camera and have given it a very short test
I find the picture quality excellent,but I do have one major quibble.
The problem is that there is a speed setting alarm which only allows you to set an alarm between 20-70 mph max. This is fine until you wish to travel in Europe where speeds are somewhat higher. (there is no option to opt out of this function)
This sounds rather petty, until you realise that there is NO facility to turn the sound OFF only to set them High, Med or Low...........
I have also found that despite the manual stating that the cam, when plugged into the USB acts as a removable device. Cetainly not on either my Win 8.1 or Win 7 laptops.
It could be just me as I am knocking on a bit,but other devices I use as plug in USB,s work OK |
