The honest answer is we don't know BUT a peek in the registry reveals the settings for a large number of 3rd party receivers so either they planned to and then decided against it or plan to at a later stage. _________________ Darren Griffin

awarner over at Modaco did ask TomTom:
Q, Will support for other GPS Blutooth devices be possible?
A, No, this is our method of security for TomTom MOBILE.
Seems pretty definitive to me (for the moment anyway)? |

Hmm, then I suppose the 3rd party entries in the registry are left overs from the port between platforms. I can understand their stance on piracy but many owners of Smartphones already have PocketPC's with GPS and some even BT Receivers.
For those users all TomTom's stance serves is to encourage them to choose CoPilot. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Agreed. I'm leaning that way as a solution for my C500. Just waiting for a side by side review to finally convince me one way or the other. |

I finished the TomTom Mobile review earlier so it should be available in the next day or so _________________ Darren Griffin |

But surely people can just buy a TT GPS receiver from eBay and then still get the software to work without having to purchase their version?? |

Fozzie63
FWIW...
I first saw the TTM software at the Stratford meet & was sold immediately. I have now had the software for over a week & I am truly impressed & will be sticking with it.
Without trying to be a salesman here are my bullet points.
Good points.
Superb GPS receiver even knows if you turn the thing on a 180-degree axis. Will work in the roof pocket of my van going through the ladders & the roof, will also work in the "hole" under the radio in the dash or in the glovebox. (This is better than my Garmin 3 Pilot).
I work in the electrical retail trade & not advertising high tec toys in the van is important.
Good intuitive software which works as fast or faster than my Clarion "proper" Sat nav fitted to my car.
Drops the voice prompts when a call comes in but still shows the map.
Really easy to see the map & good voice prompts.
Not so good points...
Crucifies the battery on my SPV.... BT & SD card running will kill the battery in less than a day. External power supply essential. (Fag lighter adaptor £5.00 each)
Can't make an outgoing call without pressing the home key, dialing & then reselecting the TTM software. It does keep track of what you are doing but it's a pain in the butt.
Won't store favorites unless you are on a road, EG my plane hanger in the middle of a field.... So I then have to store the fav on the road not the airfield half a mile away.
Disables the speaker when the headset is connected, so take a call & plug the headset in, unplug when finished, I am sure this is a hardware bug but still troublesome. I am currently playing with an external speaker & amp which will work with the headset connected via the pin out on the bottom of the phone.
Slight problem with the camera database not always alarming... but I think that may be operator error.
Couldn't get the GPS receiver to work with Mapopolis.
Overall I am very happy (and I a right fussy Bustardo) it does exactly what I want for a wicked price. I paid £1400 for my Clarion gear & it can ALMOST replace it for £200.
At last there is a killer application for the SPV, which makes up for it's other inadequacies.
Hope it helps..

Assuming you have a PC:
1. Install ActiveSync and connect your phone via the USB Cable or USB Sync Cradle
2. Extract the .ov2 and .bmp files from the Safety Camera .zip file and paste these into the Map Folder on the Storage Card via Explorer whilst Synced.
3. On the phone, within TomTom use the POI Preferences to enable the new POI and then configure a warning for it.
If you get stuck on any of these stages let us know? _________________ Darren Griffin |

My mistake, I was wrongly assuming you had an SPV
The method for copying files on the 6600 is to use Nokia PC Suite but I have seen a number of reports of file corruption when using this.
I would advise you aquire an card reader that can read MMC/SD cards, these are relatively inexpensive (<£20) and will make life a whole lot easier, you plug the reader into a spare USB Port on your PC, insert the MMC Card and it appears as a Disk Drive in 'My Computer'. You can then simply copy the files to the card using Explorer. _________________ Darren Griffin |
