I decided to revive my old TomTom ONE New Edition today, it might well do the simple job I need, so I'll give it a trial run tomorrow. As I recall, the sound was always clear enough in a variety of vehicles, and I discovered I even had one last map update paid for in the pipe to UK v940.5993, which is probably near enough for driving round Cornish lanes, which don't generally change much. Up to date speed cameras set up and it seemed to charge up ok. The small screen size is probably the only limitation compared to the potential 'new' units, but I've got a hunch that that might be negated by visibility problems in a convertible that's only mainly used on days when the roof can go down.

Another lost sale by TomTom probably, due to their own stupidity over 3rd party POIs.

If you want live traffic , pgsw cameras and lifetime mapping then I would have a look at this, it says it's a special edition with free lifetime map updates as well as traffic

However, it looks like it's lifetime traffic but not lifetime maps. The wording in the description says "TomTom GO Live 820 4.3" UK Sat Nav with Lifetime Traffic & Maps of Full Europe". But if you click on the specification tab it says " Lifetime Map Updates: No ".

Having checked that the battery recharged and performed like new, I tried out my old TT ONE NEW EDITION on the windscreen in bright sunshine with the top down today. As I'd been warned on the Mini forum, the display was pretty much invisible and I don't think a newer bigger screen would be much better. Audio was fine though, easily heard over wind road and engine noise so I think we'll make do with this old unit. We'll probably have the Scenic with on-board Carminat for a good while yet, so we're not really likely to need anyting else with Live services in the near future. The Renault dealer has given us a courtesy Clio with a touch screen system, not sure if it's R-Link, but it is the roughest most awkward innaccurate navigation system I have ever used. Definitely not recommended!

Actually, it might be great if you could try one of the later model PNDs, because the screen technology has improved a lot. I run three TT satnavs in my van - the R-Link, a GO1005 and a GO700 (2005 edition). The only thing less good about the old 700 is the screen nowhere near as good as the 1005 and I've evevn got an approved sunshade for the 700.

Probably not right to post this on the end of this thread, but we finally got the Carminat equipped Scenic back from the Renault dealer today after the door speaker replcement. The TomTom system seemed to have been reset in the process, and all my PGPSW speed camera settings were gone. Never mind, I thought, probably due for an update anyway, so remove the card, got TT Home to recognise it (not that easy it seems), and got a map update for my trouble. Next step was update the latest camera database and back to the vehicle. Imagine my surprise when trying to set up the POI warnings to see exactly the same misbehaviour described in another Carminat thread two years ago. I remembered it from a general search I'd done a couple of days ago - Dennis was helping another user in Bristol, I recall. The problem seemed to be that the association with the .OGG filename didn't seem to work and the general four option sound selection menu just caused a rollback. I wasn't sure whether that one was ever properly solved so I moved the card between PC and vehicle a few times to see what I could find out, and eventually it worked ok. So there must be a little glitch there somewhere. Rolling Eyes
