pocketgpsworld.com
A 17-year old in East Dunbartonshire has become the first driver to pass a UK driving test using a satnav.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) are trialling a revised driving test at in advance of a nationwide rollout. As part of the changes, a driving examiner will set up a route using the satnav which must be followed during the test.

Bishopbriggs Driving Test Centre is one of 20 test centres chosen to trial the revised test.

The use of a satnav is just one of a number of changes proposed to bring the driving test into line with current requirements. Amongst the changes, the three point turn and reversing around a corner will be dropped in favour of manoeuvres such as reversing out of a parking bay and pulling up by the side of the road and then rejoining traffic.

The new test standards are expected to be implemented nationwide in 2016

I've just been trying to look at that source link to read it from the horse's mouth. But I can't find anything there (I am not noted for my brightness).

Oh sure, the website's there, what I meant was I couldn't find the bit about examiners setting a route on a satnav.

SatNav's can be a distraction to even experienced drivers so an interesting move.

Well the only bit I've found about satnav is in the 10 minute independent driving exercise, where it says you cannot use satnav. Probably I'm as hopeless as I think I am.

Should make lane guidance more accurate.

Why not link tem into the car's steering to drive it for you then? Isn't "Take the second left in 75 yards" clear enough for you?
Turning left? Get into the left hand lane. Simples. Twisted Evil

Not heard it myself but I expect there are a few 'f's thrown in for good measure. Very Happy

Without knowing exactly what the rules are with this, I can only hope it's more "follow the sat-navs suggestions" than "blindly do whatever it tell you".

I'd hope the suggested route would include eg an illegal turn that the exam taker would have to deliberately ignore. If you are going to incorporate a satnav into the test (good update to the test in my mind), it should be used properly.

I used to like the Julian Clary voice, "Well we finally got here, it was a bit of an effort, but it was probably worth it."
