Been with tomtom for year but now that you can add poi and other problem has made me look at garman for my next sat nav.
for people moving from tomtom how long did it take you all to get used to garman and was the move worth it |

Difficult one to answer. Both Garmin and TomTom have dedicated followers and no matter how much we praise one company others will always disagree.
I moved to Garmin ages ago after reading users issues with TT Home, then traffic radius and subsequently the POI restriction.
I'm happy with Garmin now even though it does have some issues in the form of Smartlink but that is improving. I use Smartlink because I dislike visible cables that drape across the dash.
Before you plump for the 3598 have a read of some of the recent posts we've had about 3598 issues. Personally I can recommend the 2599LMT-D that has been trouble free for me as was my 2597LMT before that.
I think the -D is the key to the best traffic experience if your happy to use the supplied TA cable and leave it in view. _________________ DashCam:

Agreed. I wouldn't go for any Garmin model now without digital traffic, which using the cable I find is accurate and detailed. The current 2xxx range gives most 'bang for the buck' in my opinion. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Be aware that the 3598 is relatively heavy and is supported quite away from the point that it is fixed to the car - so it can wobble. It also uses quite a strong magnet to connect the display to the support so if you wish to transport the devoice to use in a rental car after a flight to another country you have to consider shipping it in the original cardboard retail packaging. |

The 3598D is great looking and fab display - and I love the mount - but the bulky traffic receiver in the lead is a little bit off-putting
The 2699 has the traffic receiver build in to the unit (not the lead) so lead is much better - but the unit even heavier and much more bulky
However, even though the 2699-D is only £180 compared to £280 for the 3598-D, I prefer using the 2699-D as everything just seems to work better (just wish it came in the 3598-Ds built and mount)
With regards TomTom I also use the 600 and 6000 units (Custom POIs are coming real soon, in final stages of beta now)
Traffic has always been better on TomTom, although for the past week I have been trialing both the TomTom and Garmin Digital together just for traffic comparison and after a lifetime of preferring TomTom traffic I would say today that they are neigh on identical, and maybe even leaning towards the Garmin
For the TomTom I would say the new interface is much better looking, more current, and clearer than the Garmin - also the units could do with a faster processor and improved touch (for which the Garmin is great)
Routing is similar, but TomTom wins especially in and around built up areas _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

I made the move from TT to 2699LMTD in November 2014.
It was quite easy to adapt once you work out how to load POI but particularly voice alerts for cameras. Other POI are very different in that you cannot just add a location from the screen; it has to be added through a csv file and then uploaded.
My one word of caution is to be aware of how much detail you need on the map, it is much coarser than TT mapping with some C roads and other public tracks not showing. I have a local hotel which TT would take you to, my Garmin turns you left from lane 1 of the M90 motorway to access the same place, other houses and farms are similarly disadvantaged.
It is not a show stopper, merely required some coordinates to be used to the nearest point on a road at which the access road joins.
As stated the digital traffic is excellent, the recent map update went smoothly.
I am very pleased with the change to Garmin |

Just to clarify ... any place can be added from the screen on a Garmin, just that it's saved as a favourite rather than a POI. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

The BIG Garmin advantage for me is that they take onboard the cameras from here.
TT no longer allow third party POI's presumably to:
a) reduce POI support calls
b) force a TT camera subscription
Size wise I find the 2599 a neat little unit that is very thin. Depends whether you prefer a 6" screen with the above posted weight considerations.
If in doubt pop down to Halfords and see them in the flesh. _________________ DashCam:

I think the Garmin has a 32 folder limit, or it did have.
Within those folders though it's as above.
What do you have in mind? _________________ DashCam:
