Does anyone know of a dash cam that is actually a dash cam?

As this is not directly about GPS system I hope it will not be wiped by the mods.

Having seen the piece about the new Garmins with the rear camera does anyone know of a dash cam that is actually a dash cam?

All that I have seen so far appear to stick on to the windscreen, obstructing the view, and as my Garmin 1440T sits on top of the dashboard, on a mat, giving a clear view from the windscreen I am attempting to find something similar, but with no joy so far.

Some advertisements mention placing behind them the interior mirror, but this still leads to the problem of routing the cable down to the cigarette lighter socket as having it hanging down across the screen rather defeats the object.

Any dash cams I've seen are designed to fix to the windscreen behind the rear view mirror as you mentioned. The wire should be long enough to route down one of the 'A' pillars and under the bottom of the dash panels to the socket. This way the wire is invisible for most of the route and should not affect visibility.

I haven't got a dashcam because I don't want 2 power wires training across the dash but if Garmin are producing dual units then I'm very interested.

I certainly agree - a front facing one would certainly be a coup. It could, perhaps have a small window showing the road ahead being filmed or the option to tab between screens, which would perhaps be better.

At present I would certainly invest in one!

Hi Allan,

I have had a RoadHawk HD for two years (bought it in January 2013). I have mounted it on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror but also slightly lower so I can see the LEDs, easily get to the SD card slot, and easily press the "event" button to mark a recording to be kept.

I don't find that the location of the RoadHawk obstructs the view. I also have a suction mount on the windscreen form my iPhone (CamerAlert and TomTom apps) and I have a good view of the road whilst being able to see the RoadHawk and iPhone.

There are a couple of things that I'd like to see on the RoadHawk HD:
1. A rear pointing camera (I may get a second dash camera for my rear window).
2. Either a screen or wireless connection via smart phone app to view (however I think you can get SD card readers that are wireless).

One thing I did do to the RoadHawk, was to use some electrician's black insulating tape to cover the name of the unit so that the installation is much harder to see from the front of the vehicle.

I guess that you're using the latest version of the firmware, i.e. 1.9?

I used a SanDisk Extreme SDXC 64 GB Class 10 Memory Card 45 MB/s card which gave a "200, Stream not found, NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound, clip" error.

Earlier this week I bought a 64GB Kingston SDXC class 10 30MB/s card, which I formatted with the SD Association's SD Formatter 4.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC tool. So far the Kingston card has recorded nearly 3 hours (each file is one minute long) without any apparent problems.
