As this is not directly about GPS system I hope it will not be wiped by the mods.
Having seen the piece about the new Garmins with the rear camera does anyone know of a dash cam that is actually a dash cam?
All that I have seen so far appear to stick on to the windscreen, obstructing the view, and as my Garmin 1440T sits on top of the dashboard, on a mat, giving a clear view from the windscreen I am attempting to find something similar, but with no joy so far.
Some advertisements mention placing behind them the interior mirror, but this still leads to the problem of routing the cable down to the cigarette lighter socket as having it hanging down across the screen rather defeats the object.
cheers

Any dash cams I've seen are designed to fix to the windscreen behind the rear view mirror as you mentioned. The wire should be long enough to route down one of the 'A' pillars and under the bottom of the dash panels to the socket. This way the wire is invisible for most of the route and should not affect visibility.

'New Garmins with a rear camera'
I haven't got a dashcam because I don't want 2 power wires training across the dash but if Garmin are producing dual units then I'm very interested. _________________ DashCam:

Just found it on the US site, it's a rear view parking camera.
Nearly got excited then _________________ DashCam:

Hello Kremmen
You had yourself commented on the piece on 8 January 2015 "New Garmin Essential line up for 2015" and you were the only one to respond.
"I wish they would scan the other direction and offer a unit with a forward facing camera with recording. At the moment you need to have a second unit like a Roadhawk. I won't be upgrading mine as Honda have signed a deal with Garmin and this years models will be supplied with an Android system and Garmin navigation with traffic is an option. Whether you can add POI's though. Probably unlikely." when Sussamb gave us the link http://newsroom.garmin.com/press-release/automotive/garmin-brings-backup-camera-support-entry-level-navigation-devices-2015-nue

Yes, ta
What in the US they call 'backup cameras' for us in the UK are actually 'reverse parking cameras'
Me getting too excited
I still stick with my original statement that a combined unit would be a coup _________________ DashCam:

Hello Kremmen
I certainly agree - a front facing one would certainly be a coup. It could, perhaps have a small window showing the road ahead being filmed or the option to tab between screens, which would perhaps be better.
At present I would certainly invest in one!
cheers

Hi Allan,
I have had a RoadHawk HD for two years (bought it in January 2013). I have mounted it on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror but also slightly lower so I can see the LEDs, easily get to the SD card slot, and easily press the "event" button to mark a recording to be kept.
I don't find that the location of the RoadHawk obstructs the view. I also have a suction mount on the windscreen form my iPhone (CamerAlert and TomTom apps) and I have a good view of the road whilst being able to see the RoadHawk and iPhone.
There are a couple of things that I'd like to see on the RoadHawk HD:
1. A rear pointing camera (I may get a second dash camera for my rear window).
2. Either a screen or wireless connection via smart phone app to view (however I think you can get SD card readers that are wireless).
One thing I did do to the RoadHawk, was to use some electrician's black insulating tape to cover the name of the unit so that the installation is much harder to see from the front of the vehicle.

Great minds think alike!
Whilst RoadHawk supply window or bumper stickers to advertise the fact that the vehicle has a dash cam fitted, which is a good thing to deter crash for cash scammers (if they see the sticker in time), I think that it's best to have a stealth installation so that people behave normally and also for security of the vehicle when parked so that passers-by don't notice the set-up.
The electrician's black insulating tape covers both the writing and the logo so that the front of the unit is black which helps it to blend into the vehicle's interior. It addition the tape can be easily removed without damaging or marking the unit in case you ever have to return it or sell it.
Out of interest, what size SD cards do you use? Do you regularly clear/format them? Do you keep spares in your vehicle?
I have been using a 16GB card, but have tried one 64GB (which failed) and I am testing another 64GB at the moment. Once I have a brand that I'm confident with I will get a couple more and keep spares in the vehicle - especially if I get a second cam for the rear. This would allow me to swap cards in case I have any recording that I wish to keep.

I have been using a 16GB card, but have tried one 64GB (which failed) ... | I currently use a 32GB card. The RH supplied 64GB card is held in reserve, as I too had a problem with it.
The HD, and card, have been back twice and, according to RH, the problem with using the 64GB card is apparently with the software writing to the exFat format. What makes it harder for them is that it doesn't affect every unit.
Privateer wrote: | Do you keep spares in your vehicle? | I keep the original 8GB and 64GB cards in the car as spares, and use the 32GB routinely. _________________ Richard

Thanks Richard,
I guess that you're using the latest version of the firmware, i.e. 1.9?
I used a SanDisk Extreme SDXC 64 GB Class 10 Memory Card 45 MB/s card which gave a "200, Stream not found, NetStream.Play.StreamNotFound, clip" error.
Earlier this week I bought a 64GB Kingston SDXC class 10 30MB/s card, which I formatted with the SD Association's SD Formatter 4.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC tool. So far the Kingston card has recorded nearly 3 hours (each file is one minute long) without any apparent problems.

I have got SD Formatter 4, but hadn't thought to try that, as Windows can format exFat, which I have used. I'll try the formatter and see what happens.
All my cards are Integral, though the 32 didn't come from RH. _________________ Richard
