Garmin Nuvi 3598

I have just replaced my ageing Tom Tom 720 with a new Garmin Nuvi 3598. On the whole it works well. It has lots of good points..But
1) There is no cable available to enable it to wired into the car electrics so that I dont have to have this ugly cable running from the cigarette lighter
2) The Garmin Help desk was less than helpful on this matter
3) I managed to load the Pocketgpsworld POIs using the Garmin POI loader - There is no help avail on this app
4) The icons come out very small compared with the Garmin supplied POIs. Is there a way of enlarging them?
5) I have yet to find a way of removing the POIs supplied by Garmin

Any help on these matters would be welcome [/list]

1) Not if you want the digital traffic as the receiver is built into the cable.
2) You must have phoned on a bad day, I've always found them extremely helpful.
3) Not sure what you mean here?
4) Don't know, I find them plenty big enough.
5) Which POI's 'supplied by Garmin'? If you mean their camera alerts just delete the relevant file in the POI folder. It should be obvious and there may be more than one depending on what mapset your satnav came with.

A quick search on this site reveals that "wibbly" resized his own icons to 44 x 44 with success on his own 3598.

Alternatively "GerryC" has posted his own icons, in various sizes, on this site for free download.

You can buy a cigarette lighter socket extension cheaply eg from Maplins, which you can splice into the car electrics after you've cut off the plug from one end.
Then, you can have the remote socket somewhere nearer the device, whilst still leaving your device's aerial cable in view of the windscreen.

As for turning off the Garmin camera alerts, there may well be a setting in the menus to do this. Alternatively, as sussamb says, remove the Cyclops-type files from your device (and copy them to your PC as part of the complete backup of the new device that most people recommend).
(NB you probably cannot turn off the "tourist" Garmin poi's that are built into the map itself).

I wired in a power socket near the fusebox to have the power cable run round from the side. Works well.

I agree with the sentiment about ugly trailing dash wires though. I don't understand why car manufacturers don't place additional power sockets in better places for the likes of SatNav's and dashcams. Down by the gearstick is a pain.

Thanks for your help guys.
Ive managed to turn off the Garmin 'places along the road' which is the terminology used here.
I edited and resized the Bitmaps using PSP but I think the originals could be larger.
Its very annoying that a) the aerial is in the cable, and b) that noone does a cable without the plug so that it can be wired into the car electrics. I did not find any mention of this in the reviews I've read.
Has anyone got alternative MP3 files?

There are 44 icons here I'm sure and I would guess they will display sharper on the unit than 'stretched' ones.

If you want to hide the cable you could try Smartlink. I can't verify whether Garmin have fixed it after they broke it last year, see my Smartlink thread.

Newer Garmins don't use .mp3 voice files but .wav and you'll need sox.exe for POILoader to process them.

Actually someone does do a cable. I've got one in the bits box. When I'm on the PC I'll look it up because when I bought it it was labelled Garmin compatible but when I last checked it was advertised as only TT compatible.

It's just a small transformer box with a mini USB one end and bare wires the other.

Forgive me Mr Kremmen but the link you provided went the a cable etc for a Tom Tom. So are you saying that this is ok for a Garmin?
On a further note when driving in certain areas I get warnings of a 19mph restriction in a 40mph zone. Is the Garmin producing this warning or is it pocketgpsworld camera POI doing this?
