|
|
It has been announced that six fixed speed cameras in Somerset are due to be switched back on after several years of inactivity.
Avon and Somerset Constabulary "bought" the cameras from Somerset County Council for £1 each back in February, but the reactivation will not be so cheap - it will cost approximately £35,000.
The police say that the resulting speeding fines will be used towards maintenance and enforcement.
They are sited in Bawdrip, Cross, East Reach, Henlade, Othery and Rooksbridge. No firm date for the switch-on has been decided yet.
Meanwhile, fixed speed cameras in the North Somerset area will remain switched off as council chiefs believe they are unnecessary.

Clash between police and council eh. Police say they are worth it and presumably the council can't afford it. |

Tony Bliar's stated intention in 1997 was to get approx 1800 drivers off the roads during his term in office, a total of 13 years. His government gave the nod for the use of so called "safety" cameras to achieve his aims. What he didn't say was that these cameras were actually SPEED cameras designed to prosecute all drivers that exceeded arbitary speed limits for any road by the factor of acknowledged tollerance +1. Positioning of these camera locations was questioned by many who proved that the main reason for these selected sites was NOT safety, but SPEED. The rules governing the number of fatalities at each location regarding justification of location was conveniently ignored by the Labour Government and the Police. |
