|
|
I bought my GO1005 last summer in anticipation that my new built in thing might be rubbish (I was correct). I have been using it only as a backup device, with navigation voice turned off.
Couple of days ago I ended up in a courtesy vehicle, so I stuck the 1005 (and of course, my trusty 520) on the windscreen. I went to London yesterday as my trip out in the vehicle and was astonished to hear the voice speaking Hammersmith Flyover as "Hammerismith Flyover (rhymes with Aberystwith). When I came out of London, I listened carefully and sure enough, it did the same. When I got home, I was sent to London again and again I got that pronunciation. So I started listening and find that an awful lot of (although not all) combinations of the letter R are doing it. The syllable is spoken heavily, not sneakily, so I'm not mishearing. For example, Gorse Lane comes as Goruss Lane, Parkwall Road was Parickwall and Park Road is Parick or Paruck.
Voice is Serena, the only one offered that reads street names. _________________ Dennis

A known issue with the combo of 935 map and Serena as the computer voice.
Was flagged by beta testers but whomever is in charge of map releases at TomTom ignored it and the map was released anyway.
There is a possibility that CS can add another computer voice to the account of the user. A call has to be made to see............. _________________ David |

I noticed for the first time yesterday that, when approaching my road, Serena pronounced "Gardens" as "Garadens".
I assumed I just hadn't noticed it before, but I'll try ringing CS. Thanks for the advice, David. _________________ Anita

The Third Right is always pronounced The Third Reich on my devices. Everything else I dismiss because with the TT version of Spanish places, the pronunciation is woeful yet never ceases to make me chuckle. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Phoned CS who offered to put the 'Jane' voice onto my account for download. Unfortunately when I checked I found the voice was already there and is a 'human' voice so cannot speak street names.
I had this response from Sarah at CS:
I have made the free 'Jane' voice available through the shop, please login to MyDrive and try again. I hope that allows the Jane voice to be available to download but I am unsure if Jane will also read the street names.
Since your call I have heard that with the recent map update the standard voice (Serena) is not correctly pronouncing street names. Therefore, this is not an issue specific to your device. The technical team are aware of the issue and working toward getting this issue resolved as soon as possible. It is anticipated this issue will be fixed with a software application update available in the near furture through MyDrive Connect.
I am sorry for the inconvenience this issue causes. If you do have any more queries, please don't hesitate to contact me via the response link below and I will be more than happy to help.
I won't hold my breath. _________________ Anita

I 'love' the way mine says Nurburgring - it's something like 'noorboorooring'. |

If she's unsure, what the hell is she doing being a customer services rep?
Knowing the difference between recorded and text-to-speech voices is surely pretty fundamental stuff and should be essential knowledge if she is going to be able to trouble-shoot the simplest of callers' problems. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

My GO 820 is also mis-pronouncing place names since the latest map update, much to the amusement of my kids
If it is a map problem, why haven't more people complained? |
