This weekend I noticed that the safety camera warnings are not coming up on my 2597. I assumed perhaps a recent update had switched them off perhaps.
However its not that simple, the unit has lost the proximity alerts bit from the setting menu. Its just not there! So how do I turn then back on ?
The other major issue I have now with this unit is connecting to usb, its just won't come up on the PC. When plugged in the Satnav screen says its connected, but nothing happens at the other end. Usually after hours of plugging in, resetting etc, it will work, but its a major pain. And I've now tried it on 4 different laptops and PCs and its now the same on all of them.
I've been disappointed with this since I got it 12 months ago, its been unreliable, it lacked basic features when I first had it, which software updates have improved, but this may be the final straw.
Any suggestions ? I've not done a system reset yet, its had plenty in the past, when its frozen, ot failed to connect to things. |

If it won't connect to your PC try the relevant tips here http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7Be908ee90-c6c1-11e1-dcef-000000000000%7D
Not sure which part of the menu you're referring to ... are you saying that under Settings you don't see Proximity Alerts? I assume you've scrolled all the way down?
There's no reason I know of why it would have disappeared although I guess if by any chance your relevant POIs had been deleted that particular entry might not show. Do the safety camera POIs appear when you look at Where to, Categories, Other Categories, Custom POIs as that's where they would normally be shown |

thank you,
They don't show in other categories. I did manage to get it connected just now and I added sainsbury's stores by browsing to the folder on the unit and dropping them in. All the camera files where there as well in the folder on the unit.
So now under other categories I can see sainsburys but no mention of any safety cameras at all.
If I go to setting and scroll down I have;
updates
map and vehicle
navigation
display,
bluetooth
traffic
units and time
language and keyboard
device.
Should not proximity alerts be in that menu list somewhere ? Its what the manual says? |

Yes, it should be above Device. You say the camera files are in the POI folder on your nuvi but they're not showing in Where to, Categories, Other Categories, Custom POIs?
If that's the case something has gone wrong with those files. I'd delete them, reinstall the camera files and then see what happens. |

OK, will try that, thanks. Its not there in the menu, its goes from language and keyboard to device, with nothing between.
And yes, they are in the folder on the unit but they don't show in the Other Categories file, but the other stuff on there does. |

update! I've use poi loader and manually created some pois with proximity alerts, that seems to have brought back the proximity alert option in the menu.
However the cameras are still not showing there, despite being on the unit in the folder still. So could it be the camera files are all corrupted or out of date or something ? I don't have access to any old backups of those here, but may be able to find some at home later.
the unit is just over 12 months old, could it be I only got 12 months with the camera alerts for free. ?

another update, I've have added the 30 day free camera trial to the unit, and now the proximity alert option for safety cameras is back in the proximity menu bit.
As my edit above is this caused a 12 month subscription to cameras that expired as I've had this unit for just over a year? It looks like to to me now.
Odd though as cameras still not showing in the other menu bit you mentioned.
I need the french safety zones as well and links on Garmin site seem to be broken for those. Honestly Garmin are shocking in my opinion..! Should have got a tom tom.! |

thanks, the links do appear to be working now. It won't let me have a trail uk and a trial french zone file which is a pain so may have to buy one!
I assume the 30 day free uk trial expires in 30 days, so I guess they can make the normal files expire in 12 months.
I had assumed, wrongly as it appears that the cameras were updated as part of my free maps etc LMT subscription. Seems not then, that required more expenditure.
I hate to think how many hours I've wasted on this blessed Garmin in the last 12 months! I only ever use it occasionally for touring and everytime I do there is some sort of issue with it.. |

I would use the cameras here before relying on the Cyclops ones. _________________ DashCam:

The free trials just allow you to update the speed cams, again once you have the files they don't expire, at least mine never have. In any case as Kremmen says you'd be better off with the files from here
As for problems, if you only use it occasionally it's not unreasonable to expect the odd issue. If like many of us you use it frequently and keep it updated then you'll find it works perfectly ... at least all my Garmins have over the years and the 3 satnavs I have now work without issue. |

well, I bought it specifically to replace a uk only tom tom for a trip across Europe last summer. I used it for a month or so before hand a few times with no issues, but on the first day of the big trip 100 miles into France it froze. Attempts to turn on and off saw it cycle through the start up process endlessly. Eventually the battery ran out, and an evening was spent trying to do factory resets. Gave up in the end, but plugged in next morning and it worked, but all favourites and much work done setting it up with info for the trip was gone. It then worked fine for 2 weeks, but it was not a good start! Meanwhile the inbuilt satnav in the other car, has never ever missed a beat, and not did the tom tom I had originally..
I do plug it in quite often to keep the maps etc up to date, and probably use it 1 or 2 times a month.
I've not looked yet, but I will, are the French "safety" files from here legal to use ? |

so to update, I have concluded that my original safety camera files were time limited and ran out after 12 months.
I downloaded the free 28 day UK safety camera database and that worked fine, and I expect that to stop working after 28 days. In fact I have had an email to advise me of that.
The original safety camera files are all still on the Garmin they just won't work anymore.
And whilst now I have the UK alerts (from the free download) i did not get any alerts in France recently, and couldn't down load the France free trial subscription as it only allowed one of them!
And an enquiry to Garmin support has just resulted in another offer of the free trial subscription.
Such a shame, I would still prefer out of date alerts to none at all, but begrudge paying any money for them on a machine that has life time maps and traffic, |
