Well it wouldn't be the first time that certain issues haven't appeared in the change log, tends to depend on the severity (as seen by Garmin) of the issue
My setup is the same as yours but my hardware is Ver 7 8gb 128mb but SA3 not SA1 as yours. Assume SA3 is newer and I have only seen 2 or at most 3 instances of grey screens in nearly 10 months since the units came onto the market _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

Done the update, and I can confirm it ain't fixed it, not that I thought it would.
I reckon the processor just ain't up to the job of displaying all that lovely high resolution mapping.
That's why they are keeping so quiet, the only way out is to recall the whole lot and replace them, (fat chance of that) they've had our money and run. _________________ Garman i3, Nuvi 300. and now a dissatisfied owner of a Nuvi 3598 LMTD

They don't all do it though ...
...I have one in front of me now which doesn't exhibit this behaviour.
This one says "V7 SA1 8GB 128MB DS"
I have noticed a Custom POI related issue though, whereby certain .GPI files induce random crashes (though fortunately not a total lock-up, as on earlier units). I gave in trying to get to the bottom of it; but it seems to be related to the number of 'Categories' in the file, rather than the number of POIs.

Mine is the same version V7 SA1 8GB 128MB DS, (I don't know what my first one was when they replaced it back in October for the same issue)
I have no custom POI's or modifications other than map and software updates, there has been no point! _________________ Garman i3, Nuvi 300. and now a dissatisfied owner of a Nuvi 3598 LMTD

Not tried that one, so I've just simulated one of my regular routes (a three hour drive to Birmingham that normally takes at least 4 ) and no it did not loose the maps, it only went blocky around the periphery when zooming out. not sure what that proved because it didn't behave on a 10 min trip to Tesco at lunchtime in the car. _________________ Garman i3, Nuvi 300. and now a dissatisfied owner of a Nuvi 3598 LMTD

Just thinking out loud and probably irrelevantly so. I don't suppose it's too many POIs slowing the map drawing up is it? Just a thought that has probably been thought before (haven't checked)

Not sure what the SA1/SA3 difference is (will email Garmin and find out as well as working out how to force the unit to only install UK maps and see if that resolves the problem (which I doubt it) )
i only have few poi's installed so it can't be that - it has to be the processing power of the unit.
Even a mobile can use the TomTom maps with full 3D without any issues, so I can't see why a dedicated unit like this can't perform well.
Hi 707
I got over 20,000 mile logged on my Nuvi 3598 (never reset trip planner) and have only seen the grey screen issue 2 or 3 times at most. Most journeys are long distance runs but sounds like your unit has a problem if you see it so regularly. Can you take a couple of screenshots and post here / send to garmin and they make contact you to go through the hidden diagnostic logs which your unit will record.
If you bought from Halfords the ask them for a replacement - need to do this weekdays 9-5 as halfords will get an RMA number from Garmin support and swap your unit over.
Have to say this is by far the best and most stable unit Garmin have produced and I've owned a few so a real shame to read your unhappy experiences _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

nuvi 35x7 and 35x8 (GCD File) software version 4.30 as of April 25, 2014
Use Garmin Express to install this file.(60.94 MB)

Changes made from version 4.20 to 4.30:
