Start 25M for my sister?

I need to recommend a satnav to my sister who, at present, occasionally uses an old Garmin 3i, but she does travel quite a lot with me using my GO720, so she knows what is (or used to be) possible. If TomTom had refurbished GO750s available I’d buy one for each of us without a second thought. Sad

The absolute essentials are:
PGPSW cameras
Spoken street names
Advanced lane guidance
Option to avoid motorways (she won’t drive on the south-west section of the M25!)
Mountable on a dash mat

It would be nice to have:
IQ routes
Itinerary planning (not possible on any recent models I think?)
SD slot, although she’s only likely to use UK maps so probably not really necessary.

Of what’s available at the moment I’m considering a Start 25M. I’d appreciate any thoughts on its suitability for my sister, or a better suggestion for around £100. In spite of everything I still want it to be a TomTom.

The Start 25 is nice enough but you can't do Itinerary Planning. An older XXL would do everything you want and you can still find new old stock, but you if can't get one with Lifetime maps then I'd pass on it.

@M8TJT: I think the Start 25M has everything on my "essential" list, although I'm not sure about avoiding motorways. I don't think she could manage without that, as I'm hoping to move near to my son and his family in north-west Surrey soon, and I don't fancy a two-hour journey each way to pick her up when she visits. Better that she spends an extra hour on a cross-country route!

@AndyP: Thanks, I'd appreciate that; I value your expert advice.

There's probably no point in an SD slot with only UK maps. Presumably there's no way to copy the device contents to a card and run from that, as I do with my 720, especially for trying out new software or maps.

And as I said I don't think there are any new or refurbished models available now that have itinerary planning so will have to forgo that.

Yes, as others have now said, I think the last models with full itinerary planning would be the XL/XXL and the GOx40/x50 ranges

Anything that's described as "NAV3" such as the GO1000/1005, VIA range and new START models (20-60) will only have the 4-point "go-via waypoint" system.

The Start 60 certainly has "Avoid motorways" so I think it's fairly safe to assume the 25 does too - it's on the SECOND page of Settings/Route Planning/Route types. TBH, I think every model does.

The Start 20-60 also have spoken street names and ALG/Lane images.

So one main decision for your sister is whether full itineraries are REALLY needed. Although I bang on about needing them all the time, if I'm honest, I only actually REALLY need them a few times a year.

Thanks for your help, Andy. Like you, while I find it useful to have the option to input an itinerary, I only use it occasionally and I think my sister would use it even less, if at all.

I searched the TT forum and it would seem that the 25 does have avoid motorways.

At £100 for the UK version with free lifetime maps I think I'll suggest she gets the Start 25M. I paid £31.47 last time I purchased a year's UK MUS!

We decided to go with the Start 25 M. Used it alongside my GO720 on a non-motorway route to north-west Surrey and back again via the M25, and I was quite impressed, especially for the price, although I haven't yet connected it to the computer and experienced My TomTom.

I'd get one myself as a back up for my ageing 720 if only it had bluetooth. Maybe I'll look into alternative methods of hands free, although the total price of the two devices may be prohibitive.

Any suggestions for hands free much appreciated.

I always used Jabra BT earpices (but now have bluetooth radio in the van).

I just paid £25.96 for latest map v925 and 12 months plus 6 months map update service (for my trusty old GO 520 which had v910 map)
