They have had these cameras on the M11 inbound for many years now and they work perfectly, slowing the traffic down to 50mph just at the camera! It's about time we had average speed cameras on all our roads to stop the madness of drivers doing more than the speed limit and then braking suddenly when they spot a camera........

Pete. Try driving on a motorway at 50mph because of average speed cameras at 02:00 in the morning and see how frustrated you get. I for one don't want average speed cameras unless they are for road works. Mad

All sorts of things on the road can 'frustrate' you ... but you've just got to learn to live with it, otherwise it would be a 'free for all' out there.

Is it really so difficult to drive at 50 mph? How do you manage at 0200 in the morning on roads when the limit is 40mph? 30mph?

And why would roadworks make a difference at 0200?

Hi sussamb, I was talking about motorways in the middle of the night with no traffic. Not on A roads.

What do you want, everybody setting their own 'speed limit' at 0200 just so they're not frustrated? I drive on blue lights from time to time, I could allow myself to be 'frustrated' at 70 as I know on a deserted motorway at 0200 I could safely drive at 100 plus ... but that wouldn't be right either Wink

I thought an 80mph briefly came under consideration, as modern vehicles are designed to cope with it. Though can see it is not very compatible with using hard-shoulders as carriageway, or lorries speed-governed at 60mph. It is beginning to feel a bit messy: 20mph, 30mph, 40mph, 50mph, 60mph, and 70mph limits are all in use. Perhaps we need road-side transponders that can trigger a dash-board read-out in vehicles? How long before they expect cars to communicate between themselves and not need an active driver? Will data ever be that 100% trustworthy?

I think you're missing the point. I've driven on blue lights as well, nothing to do with the subject, which was placing average speed cameras along motorways. Again, I state that if there are workmen and narrow lanes yes then have average speed cameras. My point is that if they were placed on motorways at speeds lower than 70mph to keep traffic moving and not bunching up, good. The problem is average speed cameras don't switch off when the motorways are empty. So to do up 70mph at other times would be ok. How many times have you driven along a 70mph road at 50mph because of road works, to find at weekends the signs are placed on the side of the road but its still 50mph. Perhaps I'm not explaining myself properly, but I hope you can see my point.

Yes, I get that. I agree it's not a perfect world, and being stuck at 50 when there seems to be no need isn't ideal ... my comment really was aimed at 'being frustrated', and I guess I was trying to make the point that we (as responsible drivers) shouldn't let frustration into our driving Wink

People get frustrated for all different reasons. Many drivers get frustrated being stuck behind a second lane hugger, which I thought the Police were going to do something about. Sussamb can you honestly say in your day to day driving you have never been frustrated?

Definitely not ... but I try not to let things like speed limits on an empty road get to me or I'd be frustrated a lot of the time Smile

As for second lane hoggers, I'm with you there. They do frustrate me as they turn 3 lane motorways into 2 lanes Twisted Evil
