Look at and count the lane marker white lines. There are 9 between the two cars. At 9 metres apart, that's 81 metres, two chevron sets.
I see the sign as you being a gap (half distance) before first chevron and the car in front being a gap (half distance) beyond the second chevron. Looking at the sign with my comment in mind, it's possible to even think I might be seeing it that way!  The gap between the two chevrons on the sign is pretty much the same as the gaps of cars before and beyond them.

I didn't realise both 100m and 500 m markers were in use hence my erroneous comments earlier.
Looking at it for a final time I can't find a definitive/official guide as to how you are meant to use the chevrons. I see your explanation and the 80m distance makes sense based in the maths of others but in practise I've only ever left 40 m between myself and the car in front. Next time I drive through some ill have to make a mental note of the behaviour of myself and others. |

There is a jolly big blue sign that says 'Keep apart 2 chevrons'. What other usage guidance do you want?  |

Because it appears the 2 second rule dictates a distance between cars of 62 meters at 70 MPH but the distance between chevrons is 40 meters.
I use the chevrons as I believe they are displayed on the jolly big blue sign. with one gap between vehicles. Ie 40 m apart. Others seem to interpret it differently. |

Oh, I see.
The Type 1 Distance marker posts are tenths of a kilometre so the distance apart is 109.36 yards / 5 chevrons i.e. 21.192 yards x 2 chevrons = 43.824 yards.
So that's 131.472 feet. Well short of the 70 thinking and 245 stopping distance.
I've checked Google and gone over the route from where the M2 ends and A2 starts right through to Dover and can't see them. Mind you, I never noticed them about 4 or 5 weeks ago when I last went that way. Must be too new for Google.
Hope someone here passes that way and can double check, after all, my brain is nearly as old as our dear DennisN.

Well that would only be true if you could see the chevron directly behind the vehicle in front AND the chevron in front of you, so the cars would be more than 40 metres apart. Plus the thinking distance at 70mph is 21 metres, so 2 chevrons 'apart' should be an adequate gap. |

I thought the '2 second rule' was a) some nonsense made up by a hilariously witty driving instructor ad b) to do with eating food off of busy floors.
Regardless, I don't believe it's in t'highway code. |
