 Navman hosted a Press launch day on September 7th 2004 and invited PocketGPSWorld.com and 13 other journalists from The Sun, Dennis Publishing, and Haynet Publishing to name a few companies. The main aim was for Navman to show off it's latest 2004/2005 line-up of products which is soon to be released and to re-affirm it's position in the GPS market. The launch took place in The Seattle Hotel, Brighton Marina, UK.
These included:- Navman iCN510, Navman iCN635, Navman iCN650 which gives Navman a great new line-up with new software pre-loaded!

Dave,
The new hardware looks good.
Any hard info on how up to date the TeleAtlas maps are? And more specifically: Are they as good as the latest NavTec maps are for Ireland?
Did you get any feedback on why Navman are sticking with TeleAtlas? |

I would suggest that they are the same as in the Tomtom Go. As for the TeleAtlas vs. Navteq, it's all about the money. Navteq cost more to licence, it's as simple as that.

The maps are 2004 (Q3) so are likely to be as up to date as you can currently get from TeleAtlas.

Kev, I have compared the latest NAVTEQ maps from CoPilot Live 5 with the latest TeleAtlas maps on the Navman and there is still a huge difference between Ireland coverage between the two companies. NAVTEQ have come on leaps and bounds. I interviewed TeleAtlas at the launch and they did admit that Ireland coverage was still fairly poor and although TeleAtlas had plans to re-map Ireland it's been on and off a few times and now it's on the back burner, so I wouldn't expect any greater coverage of Ireland from TeleAtlas maps over the next 6-12 months.
I didn't receive a comment as to why Navman are now using TeleAtlas, but there is a significiant difference as I understand between the per seat licensing costs. Whether this is the main difference that makes companies switch to TeleAtlas I'm not sure, but obviously there's a cost difference and likewise a performance hit on how much percentage is covered of a country. |

My biggest concern is will roads like the M6 Toll be on it together with the surrounding minor road changes.
Also, if I decide to only go for the latest UK maps, will my current europe maps work ok? I went on holiday to Germany this year and travelled from the tunnel through Luxembourg, and onto just south of Munich, then into Austria on day trips - and although there are some changes not enough to worry me at the moment.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply.
I am well aware that Ireland is a niche and not (at the moment) profitable country for map providers but Navteq have really uped the ante and I am now going to sell my well-loved ICN 630 for a Pocket PC and Copilot 5.
I'm sure that Navman won't be shaking in their boots with my token protest but what's the point in having a GPS if the mapping for the required country is less than adequate? |
