Not sure why there is an issue with the POIs as the 3597 and 3598 are the same model apart from the digital traffic receiver and a few files which reside within the system directory to support the traffic but this shouldn't affect the POIs
Just after your post I received an email from Garmin support asking me to send them the GarminDevice.XML file. Which I did straight away. A week or so later I received a response saying the device had now been made compatible. But sadly it was still not listed and neither could I download the Guide. I wrote back and once again received a request to send them the .XML file. Even though I responded immediately, I have heard nothing since then and still the device is not listed as compatible.

Having now bought a 2508 I have just re-read this post. There are a few references to 'no dashboards' and datafields, but additional ones can be added ... detail is in this thread:
It did it again (maps turning grey) on one journey with the taffic cable. But did not do it when it wasn't connected on the next journey. So armed with this information I then called Garmin. They just kept insisting it was faulty and they wanted me to swap the device at Halfords.
Of course I had little choice but to do that, so as I drove past Halfords I swapped it over with another one. I will do a test on this one but I am not expecting it to be different.
On a sidenote, this unit also had a 4GB memory card already inserted on it. However Garmin Express played nicely this time, and installed the 2014.10 maps without fuss on the main memory (100MB left free on the device).
Another 3598 user here with the grey screen problem and I've only done three trips with it. I did two small trips of about 40 and 50 which were fine, and today I have just got back from Norwich which was 111 miles both ways. It grey screened twice on the way there and once on the way back. This is going back to Halfords in the morning as I'm not in the least bit impressed. Too many people reporting this problem for it not to be an inherent fault.
All trips were with traffic enabled and smartphone link connected. Must say I have not tried it with everything disabled.

That's interesting...both of mine have done it...one from halfords and the replacement from garmin. From this I guess they will be different batches. It only ever happened when smart link was enabled. There was an update for the smart link app on the iphone this week and since then I haven't had the problem. It may just be coincidence and could happen again but time will tell. I am convinced its the app that causes it. Please let us know how you get on with the replacement.

I read with interest the occasional report about Satnav lock-ups.
To me the SatNav is just a hardware mini computer with an OS (Operating System) and the manufacturers own navigation software.
If a unit has a lock-up problem then surely there is an inherent problem with either?
A replacement unit, unless it has a different software version is unlikely to have anything different, same hardware and same software? _________________ DashCam:

I think like all computers you get the occasional lock up, normally cured by a reset or switch off switch on. Where it's not acceptable is when that becomes too frequent or constantly occurs at some specific, repeatable point. Then it's a bug that requires fixing.
I get a part grey screen, seems to be when there is too much load on the processor & it cannot update all of the map segments fast enough. It also seems to take ages to plan a route, my old tomtom one of at least 6 years old is still faster.
Just wish I could get rid of the knives & forks £ signs & petrol pumps.
Thought I had cracked it, from map, then 'up ahead' then spanner, it showed the above three mentioned categories & allowed me to change them. Ha, I thought, change them to something that there are not many of, so chose airports & roadside services from the built in garmin POIs and Maplin from my added custom POIs.
Fantastic, bleedin' annoying icons gone from the map I thouhgt. Nope still there :o(
Also the internal memory is almost full, just 338Mb left from 8gig. The supplied sd card is 4Gb, so unless the next few map updates & firmware will allow the map to be split between internal & SD memory, we will be stuffed. At best will have to buy a 16Gb SD and hope all the maps can be put on there, else garmin will say 'as per the lifetime map updates, only valid till the maps are too big for your device'
Have also noticed the new 2013.30 map directions are not as good as the previous map 2013.20. It does not tell me to turn from a main road into a side road if the side road is straight on or at the apex & the main road bends to the left or right. Have noticed this on a road near me, the main road has a tight left hand bend, the sat-nav map shows straight on into the side road at the apex & no voice warning to 'turn right' So anybody not knowing the road would carry straight on & very likely get T boned. The original map was fine & had this junction correct as does my trusty old tomtom, but 2013.30, does what I describe above. It does similar things with road forks.
On the plus side there are far more photo lane assists than in 2013.20 & they always have blue skies and no trees obstructing the road sign :o)
Can't really see why they cost £280 when a £70 unit will do almost everything this one does. Bluetooth is a bit of a waste of time. My phone links to my hands free kit and cannot link to the sat-nav at the same time. anything Bluetooth worth having, garmin charge for anyway. Yes I know I could use the sat-nav for a phone hands free, have tried it but the sound quality is truly awful. I thought Parrot handsfree was awful but it is way better than the garmin.

Have you tried not selecting 'Places along the road' in Map Layers? That removes them completely on mine
You can get satnavs without Bluetooth, mine doesn't have it, so you don't have to pay for something you don't need
338Mb free should be enough for a number of map updates, but nuvis will accept up to 8Gb cards according to Garmin and I know many have had no issues using up to 32Gb, so there shouldn't be a problem

I got quite a bit of space back on mine by deleting the unneeded foreign voice and help files and a few other bits and bobs.
I've got a 4Gb 'fast' card in it just to be on the safe side though.
Next job is to quieten the PGPSW camera voices as they are louder than the navigation voice.
Anything over 40% for the camera voices is far too loud so I need to experiment with Adobe Audition ASAP.
I'm going to aim for 60% throughout. _________________ DashCam:

by deselecting places along the road, I loose all POIs from the screen.
I want my POIs not the three mr garmin thinks I want.
I also notice with the latest map, as well as the three POIs mentioned, there is also a golden M appearing.
Why on earth would I want that? I am guessing that golden M have done a deal & given mr garmin loads of money to advertise their full of fat & sugar cr@p on MY sat-nav.
Also had grey screen problems today, only some of the map was displaying. I think it was processing travel updates as these popped up shortly after.
My conclusion is that the 3598 is very w@nky indeed.
