Hi
No - I didn't claim on my insurance - taking the excess and future increased premiums into account it was debatable as to whether I would be best to claim or not.
I contacted Satmap by phone, and they offered me a discount in view of my situation, and made me a new map card (very slightly different to my old one).
The service was exemplary as I have said before.
Although I had copied my card onto my hard drive, they say this is just so they can reinstate a corrupted card, not to replace lost ones. Something to do with OS copyright.
I only wish I had backed the routes and AOI up also...........
HTH

I wonder which Garmins they had? My Etrex 20 with both GPS and GLONASS is more accurate than any other Garmin I've owned/used, and when geocaching puts me within a few metres of caches. I'd be amazed if a satmap was more accurate.

I certainly wouldn't pay the price of a satmap when for just over £100 I can get that sort of accuracy in a GPS whose batteries (2 x AA) last a good 3 days.

Goodness - what a fool I have been.
Anyone want to buy a good second hand SatMap?
I am off to buy an Etrex 20 straight away.

I have never been concerned about the accuracy of the A10 for walking. One or two slightly odd readings, over the years, for very short periods, but nothing that has caused me any concern. Given that, the screen size, the way the device works and the excellent support from SatMap I would not be tempted to change but I would be interested in your views after you try the new device Rogerfrit.

Do let us know how you get on.

I managed to borrow a GPSMap 62s and tried under light tree cover (it was a miserable day so did not venture far!) with my old eTrex. Surprisingly the eTrex locked up first but soon the 62s was showing more satellites at better strength/quality (not which shown on the bar graph). The 62s went down to about 10 ft precision whilst the eTrex stayed around 100 ft.

That's not surprising, the original Etrex didn't have a very sensitive antenna/receiver package. The new Etrex models should be better than the 62 when using GPS and GLONASS (the 62 series can't access the GLONASS sats) Wink

Just a quick couple of comments-
Although it's possible to copy the map to another card/device it's not possible to use it from that card. The map is locked to the original card. The copy is only for backup purposes incase the original card data gets corrupted.
Not sure how long that my rechargeable battery would last for but it certainly lasts for a days walking with some to spare.

I know for a fact that My backup card of the 1:25000 Peak district card works perfectly in my Son in laws satmap I copied my original just for testing purpose and it works Not locked to card or device?
I'm not sure if its because it's only a specific area map But I may just try it with the Full map to see....

I am pleased for you but I'm pretty sure that it is not meant to do that. It would make map Piracy far too easy. Please let us know how you get on with the other map.

Well I copied the entire Full GB 1:50k Landranger map yesterday and today I went into the peak district with this "backup" card and it worked flawlessly
I am not encouraging misuse in any way shape or form, but lets be honest Garmin maps can be found around the web so I ask why has nobody ever uploaded the satmap maps??

also is there anyway to use the open street maps on these devices?

Lez...
