Downloaded the new update ver1.2 and i must say its brilliant, the voice is so much clearer and i was also told to update to a new software update for the camera data ,I run it with Navigon and it was perfect so its a top App as far as I am concerned.

Google maps consume very little, impossible to give you a figure as it does off course depend on how often you use it, for how long and if you have it configured for maps to show all the time or only when near (or even never!).
Personally I have it set to only show the map when near. As the map is only re-drawn when actually displayed, if you are using it with a nav app then you will be using no data at all in respectt of the map .
You can gauge data usage by monitoring the Settings | General | Usage menu option.
Note the Cellular Network Data Received figure before and after one of your usual driving periods.
O2 are also not rigidly enforcing the 500Mb by all accounts but will be taking action against anyone who exceeds it greatly or regularly. _________________ Darren Griffin |

there s also a 59p app called 'PhoneUse' [iTunes link] that will break your data usage down into mobile data and wifi data which, if you're on a strict data plan, could be useful.

Was looking for a device to buy when I saw this, tested and works great.
I turn it on then press home button and then turn the phone off (standby). As phone is connected bluetooth to the car, I get the warning over the speakers, and as warning are configurable can minimize the disruptions too.
Only question I have is that if I leave it running in the background, say even while at home it is constantly running and using the GPS and data and battery? Do I need to kill the app everytime I don't want to use it?
Lastly is there anyway to make it startup or shutdown by itself? (wish iphones had NFC) |

Welcome. If there has been no significant movement for about 10 minutes then the app will turn off the GPS tracking.

The application will exit (if it is in the background) after your GPS position has not changed for 10 minutes. _________________ Lutz

Nice. I take it there no automated way of starting the app? (guessing iPhone deficiency) |

Sadly not - and, yes, this is down to iOS limitations.

Android has the concept of "Car Dock Mode" where you can start applications when you plop the device into a powered holder, and stop them again when you remove the device. There is no such concept yet on iOS but the "iBeacon" stuff seems to go in the same direction. It uses Bluetooth LE rather than USB events or NFC. We are watching that space and may offer that functionality once the technology matures. _________________ Lutz

Thanks Lutz. I understand now. I didn't know about that. I feel a Google coming on.
EDIT: A quick Google of the XDA website indicates that it is not present in 4.1 or later for the European versions. Shame. There seems to be confusion amongst some, as they have a 'car mode' which is reading out stuff using TTS, but the Car Dock mode from which you can run apps when plugged into a car dock has been removed.
But this is a bit off topic for you iOS fanboys. |
