A "Safe Speed for Life" report claims that the presence of speed cameras on Sunderland's roads over 22 years is helping to save lives.

They say that statistics indicate that Sunderland's accident blackspots have become safer since cameras were introduced.

The report is based around fixed cameras sites in the city. At one site, close to a school, twelve serious incidents and deaths were reported between 1990 and 2000, but just three between 2001 and 2012.

At another, there were fifteen serious incidents or deaths between 1990 and 2000, falling to four between 2001 and 2012. The pattern continues over other sites with the exception of one site where people seriously injured or killed have increased from six to eight over the reported periods. The report also suggests that mobile cameras in the area are helping to reduce accidents.

As to whether the speed cameras alone can claim all the credit for the overall reduction is open to speculation. It is not reported if other safety measures were introduced in the area or whether the reductions may be, in part, as a result of greater vehicle safety or indeed other factors.

Emmm... I can entitle my report: eat bananas, it will save your life.
then, over 40 or so pages, I can deliberate that each victim of air or road accident could be alive now and in the good health only if they would eat the bananas instead of driving/flying.

To make a good report, they should follow the base rules: they can compare the real situation with real situation in SAME conditions, e.g. by examining one full year with speedcams installed, and then to remove it for next year. Decade and then another period of time gives no information.
for example, even the average amount of drivers using that road is unknown. How many of them chosen to use another road since they knew that speedcams were installed?

Otherwise the report will be as true as IPCC one.

Wot he said and I wonder what the previous 20 years were like. Perhaps it was a blip 1990-2000 and the latest figures are just a regression to the norm.

If you pick and choose individual cameras, you can make the facts fit your prejudices.

I stand up and turn around three times after I get out of bed. My mother told me it would stop me being trampled to death by elephants. She was right. I am still alive and I'm old enough to have retired. In fact this advice is so effective that I haven't even seen an elephant outside of a zoo. Embarassed Rolling Eyes
