TomTom Business Solutions is to launch a new dongle that will allow third-party apps to access real-time vehicle information.
The TomTom Link 100 will connect to the OBDII diagnostic port (fitted to all vehicles since 2004). Apps can then interrogate the vehicle data provided via the OBDII port. Their is a wide range of data available including engine rpm, coolant temperature, rule consumption, emissions.
Quite how this data will be used by third-party apps remains to be seen but TomTom mentions insurance and leasing companies in their press release so draw your own conclusions.
Similar solutions have been available for some time, utilising OBDII and Bluetooth so it's not yet clear how TomTom's solution will differ.
TomTom Link 100 is due out before the end of this year.

... aaaand they've already dropped support for it and are pretending the thing never existed.
Wait, I'm about a week early on that. |

Freudian slip or not? Rule consumption: how many 'road rules' you 'consume' (i.e. break)... |

I think the key thing is that it is "TomTom Business Solutions" - so they will either sell it to businesses to stick in company cars or trucks etc to monitor driving habits and/or try sell them to insurance companies as an alternative to their current suppliers for the 'black box' trackers they often give to new drivers now.
