Call For More 20mph Speed Cameras

London Mayor, Boris Johnson has been called to introduce a 20mph speed limit right across central London, with exemptions for some main roads.

This follows London's City area introducing the lower limit, the third borough to do so. The City has promised rigorous enforcement using average speed cameras.

The reduction is also being introduced on most roads in Southwark and Hackney, and Camden and Islington have voted for a 20mph limit.

London Assembly Green party member Jenny Jones said London should now follow Portsmouth's lead, which was the UK's first 20mph city.

Ms Jones added: "Putting up signs and changing the culture is cheaper and better value for money than spending decades rolling out speed cushions and chicanes across every corner of London."

Transport for London, which is chaired by Boris Johnson, commented: "We are supporting boroughs looking to introduce 20mph limits, and will always consider 20mph limits where appropriate on our own road network."

So what about the substantially increased pollution from cars/lorries/vans/buses all having to be in a lower gear????? Especially from diesels.

Over 20mph on a push bike is tempting the limits of controllability with most riders.

My council is to introduce 20mph limit in Keynsham. But only on the estate roads where 20mph is mostly unreachable anyway. And they'll be putting up zillions of 20mph signs and repeaters. There are currently no 30mph repeaters that I have seen and they are not needed because we all know about 30mph in built up areas. As far as I'm aware, the only speeding around here is on the "major" through routes which are to remain set at 30mph. The only mobile speed cameras here are on routes which will remain at 30mph.

The proper way to do this would be for the government to legislate for the standard speed limit to be 20mph. Trouble is, if they did that, THEY (government) would have to fund the costs of changing all the signs. So the easy get out is to "empower" local councils to make their own decisions and pay for them. It's the same situation as when we went decimal, except road signs stayed in miles so that govt didn't have to pay for them to be changed.

There is nothing wrong with a global change. Make everywhere 20mph where 30mph currently applies. No confusion, no loophole chasers seeking entry points where the signing is dubious. Simple straightforward change to adopt a less harmful limit. Everybody learns to drive more sedately in town.

Why stop at 20mph, why not bring back the guy with the red flag to walk in front of the cars, ffs.

Mainly because some morons who think they can drive at 30 in crowded streets with pedestrians around aren't capable of stopping when the unexpected happens and end up injuring or killing someone. At 20 mph the damage is considerably less

The number of road casualties has been decreasing consistently since the 1970s. The number of deaths and serious injuries has almost halved in 10 years, and the UK is one of the safest countries in the world with regard to road casualties.

While every casualty is very regrettable, is this really an area where we need to spend more time, money and effort, to the inconvenience of most safe regular road users.

Hardly an inconvenience. In most cities you're unlikely to average more than 20mph anyway, and what happens at the moment is that drivers speed up just to brake later. Adding to that is those who feel that 30 means 40 ...

I agree road casualties are decreasing, but still at high risk are children on our roads in cities who aren't as 'road aware' as some, mainly because childrens brains aren't as capable of assessing speed as adults. Then of course there are the elderly who also figure quite largely in the statistics.

So, for not much inconvenience (if we all drove at 20 in cities we'd get there just as quickly in most cases) we could save lives ... works for me, bring it on

So they haven't given a reason as to why they want to introduce a 20mph limit. I suppose it's just the fashionable thing to do.
