Possibly a corrupt file, it's not unknown. Download the US one again and see what happens.
Incidentally the earlier nuvis were fairly strict when it came to map filenames. What names are you using? gmapsupp.img will work, so if your US map isn't called that try renaming it to see if it's recognised.
Also note that there's a limit on the number of map tiles that some GPS can read. Some OSM maps can be made up of many tiles so I guess it's possible that the US map exceeds the allowable limit, in which case you'd have to split it into two.
I also seem to recall that the earlier nuvis were limited to map sizes of 2Gb, although this was changed with a software update. If your software isn't up to date you could try doing that also, as the US map will be well over 2Gb. |

But have you actually tried the re-naming as suggested? |

What filename does the US map have?
If it's not gmapsupp.img right click the file then select rename, rename it as gmapsupp.img, see if it then works.
Incidentally the file comes as a zipped file, I assume you've unzipped it?
Edit: since posting this I've downloaded the file and it works fine on my 1490, so I suspect yours may have corrupted while downloading IF you've named it correctly, it's in the correct folder on the card and you've selected it in Settings, Map, Map Info |

Will you be driving across the whole of America? Or just a few states? If the latter then how about just downloading the sates you will be driving in?
I do that for European mapping - I may be allowed to download the whole of Europe but in reality the countries I would download are UK, France and Spain to save space on a device. |

I thought that too ... but the map comes 'as is'
It may be possible to install it to a PC so that you could split it using Basecamp or a similar program, but given the OPs comments I felt it wasn't worth trying that until we've exhausted all other options |
