i bought 3 garmin sat navs as we are hiring 3 cars in USA, they currently have Europe maps. I have looked at the maps for life on the garmin site.. can i download the usa maps and put them on the 3 sat navs i have or are the maps unique to each model.. ie usa maps for a Garmin A wont work on a Garmin B...
or any better suggestions to get usa maps
thanks |

IMO you'd have been better buying them in the US pre-loaded with US maps
As for adding maps now, you'd need to buy separate maps for each GPS.
Your other option is OSM maps ... http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ |

If you mean a Garmin SD card with the USA maps pre-installed then the card will work in all 3, but you'd need 3 cards. The advantage would be that you could sell them on afterwards. |

The answer is in the second paragraph of post 2. Or even more specifically and as a direct answer to your latest question, NO |

think i have found away around this... i'm a noob so be gentle with me..
each sat nav has a SD card with Uk and Europe.. i have d/l the open source maps for USA..
Do i ...
A: Put the USA onto the same SD card as Europe maps
or
B: Put USA on a seperate SD card to Europe?
i would like to put the maps all on one card, can i change files names, eg change gmapsupp.img to usagmapsupp.img and europegmapsupp.img so they dont overwrite each other?
thanks |

Not sure why you'd have the EU map on a card?
However if they all fit you can put them on the same card, and rename them as you wish.
Note they need to be in a folder named Map. |

UK seems to be pre installed on the sat nav, Europe is on the SD |

Yes, Map. Garmin folder was the folder for older Garmins, newer ones use Map. Newer Garmins will read some map files from the Garmin folder but only those with certain names. Easier therefore to use a Map folder where you can name them anything you want.
Edit: Having read your other post I'd leave the EU maps that came with the satnav in their existing folder, just use the Map folder for the USA map or any other OSM maps you load.

Really? What model are they? Where did you get them from?
It's not a method I've come across before so just interested to find out. Might be a sign that Garmin have at last recognised how large the maps are getting
Another thought that might change what I said earlier. Are these cards that came with the satnav Garmin cards pre-installed with the EU map? If so then really you shouldn't add anything to the card. They are protected in some way so that the files are locked to that card, and for example if you copied them to another card they won't work.
Your best bet if that is the case, and if you have enough internal memory on your satnav, would be to put the US OSM map into a Map folder on the satnav itself. If there isn't enough space, to ensure you don't screw up your EU card, put the US map on another card in a Map folder and swap cards as required. |
