Problem is that Madasafish and Plusnet are the same company, so will they care if I threaten to move from one to the other? _________________ Bazzza

Yes, you are right. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and start by asking for my MAC Code. I'm sure they will ask me why. The package you quote from Plusnet is virtually the same as mine and similar price too but it has the advantage of another 5GB download and no limit after midnight. Watch this space.
(30 mins waiting time Sunday morning so I guess it will be tomorrow.) _________________ Bazzza

No. The retentions department actively encourage movement onto the +Net package. _________________ Garmin Drivesmart 51 LMT-D Europe |

Speed - depends how fast your connection is plus how fast TomTom send the data to you.
To check your own connection try SpeedTest http://www.speedtest.net/
Anything over 5Mbps I would say is reasonable. Obviously more is better.
Size of the file - the maps for my 600 are over 5Gb. On my home connection this takes half an hour. I have an unlimited connection so size of files is no issue. I have experienced downloads much slower than this and may be because TomTom are not sending the file fast enough e.g. when maps are first released they get more people trying to download. Therefore it may be worth waiting a few days for the rush to die down. Or just leave it running overnight!
If you are exceeding your limit downloading a 2Gb (ish) file then I'd suggest looking for an alternative provider or paying for more allocation. (If they is one in your area). Lots of companies now offer at least 20Gb, if not 40Gb or unlimited. |

I spoke to Madasafish this morning and they suggested a change to Plusnet.
But, when it was worked out, because the telephone element the new deal was much more expensive, I would have been paying a good bit more per month. As the only time I exceed my download limit is when I download a map update, it is not worth changing provider. I guess I just have to resign myself to paying an extra £2 per GB when I download the map updates..
I don't think the problem is my Broadband speed. I checked it just now (6pm) and registered 12.2Mb/sec so I think suspicion falls on TT.
Thanks everyone, for your suggestions. _________________ Bazzza

I would agree with you, bazzza.
Assuming you have any reasonable broadband connection, then I think slow (or fast!) map downloads are almost entirely dependant on the TomTom servers themselves.
It's never really been explained why a download from them can take far longer than an equivalent-sized download from anywhere else. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Being fair to TT, the map downloads can be huge. They will pay their internet provider a fee for an amount of bandwidth (in a similar way to you and I). I suspect their provided may throttle use if the download requests are numerous. TT may also restrict bandwidth to protect other services e.g. their website or internal network to servers.
Without knowing their infrastructure it's difficult to say, however having sufficient bandwidth to send out multiple Gb of data simultaneously has a cost. In an indirect way if they increased bandwidth their costs would go up and so would device prices.
It's a balance.
I tend to wait a few days after a new map is released and don't have any problems. |

Sorry for being dozy, but how do you know when a new map is released? _________________ Bazzza

I think for the last few years, I've consistently seen a new post in this forum, long before any email from TomTom, and often even before any announcement from TT at all!
Usually the post is just from someone who regularly connectes to Home or MyTomTom for the minor updates and a new map has been offered unexpectedly. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

One final question and then I will shut-up:
For how long is a map update available on My TT before it is removed?
Or is it always available to me until such time as I download it?
Cheers,

If you have the Map Update Service subscription, a newer one -- if available -- should always show when you log in as long as you do within the term of the subscription. _________________ David |
