I have a strange problem and keen for any suggestions as have searched this forum and also online but without luck. Hoping for some advice here.

TomTom 710 normally routes fine and works well, but when I try to plan a route that involves using M4 J11 approaching from South the TomTom crashes when "writing route instructions". It doesn't matter if I plan to go West on M4, North to Reading or whatever.

Same issue regardless of "Navigate to" or "Prepare Route".

However, entering the same route in reverse i.e. approaching M4 J11 from West or North to go South - it works fine.

I noticed this in maps v9.10.
Firstly I thought corrupt map download, so redownloaded the map v9.10 - same issue.
Same issue with map v9.15, and when the TomTom updates the map, settings.cfg is rebuilt so it is not that.

Cold boot after removing SD card - no effect
Holding the reset button (hidden away next to dock connector contacts) with paperclip for 10 seconds - no effect

ClearFlash Tool is OS X 10.6 / Rosetta only so can't use that.

Going back to an old SD card backup of map v9.05 works fine (whilst on map v9.05)

TomTom Go 710
App 7.903
Map - Europe North and issue present in v9.10 and v9.15.
QuickGPSfix/Ephemeris data - never get from TomTom HOME anymore after their errors.

So, what other files can I delete that would be rebuilt automatically (or transfer from an old backup)?
Or is this a map issue introduced in v9.10?

Thanks in advance.
John.

Planning a route from Basingstoke to either Reading or M4 J12 works fine on my 720, so it doesn't appear to be a general map error.

Thanks Anita for checking.

So the UK RoI map v9.15 is ok. This points to it being my device - more likely to be that than Europe North v9.10/v9.15....

I don't know, John. It doesn't sound like a fault on the device if it works OK on map v905. Could it be the combination of map and app you're using? Maybe the newer maps aren't fully compatible with the latest app available for the 710.

Hopefully someone with more experience than I have will come up with a suggestion. It would be good if another 710 user could give it a try.

Otherwise, if it's a route you use often, I should have thought it would be best to stick with the old map. It's unlikely much will have changed over the last six months.

Edited by Anita to correct model number.

I have a GO 910 here, App 7.903 (latest for x10 range), Map UK&ROI v910.

It does the job fine.

The error message used to be an indication that the SD card was getting full.

When planning a Route the Internal Memory sometimes has to use Virtual Memory, on the SD Card, because it becomes full itself. Much like a PC.

IIRC at least 2Mb of free memory was required.

If you can get to use the Clear Flash Utility, it also helps as it removes old orphaned data from Internal Memory.

The're the only things I can think of to try.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

SD Card - 2Gb card with 529Mb free & integrity check passed so free space should be OK. Write protect tab is not locked but the early TomToms ignored that anyway.

My next option is to try deleting files like the mappatches etc.
I keep backups of SD cards so will try mix 'n match to see if I can get it working again.

If this was some random motorway junction then chances are I would never have spotted it; it just so happens that this is probably the junction I use 2nd most often. Coincidence? unlikely.

OK, so I went back to a tested and known working v8.95 Europe North map.
Cleared out all downloaded maps & postcodes from TomTom Home folder on the Mac.
Unchecked mapshare patches
Updated directly to 9.15 (bypassing the ones in between).

Sadly still the same issue.

All I can think is that some incompatibility is introduced in v9.10/9.15 Europe North for old x10 devices, or a I am just really unlucky to have the same anomaly come up twice....

I have just checked that junction for routing, and I get the same problem.

It can't be a 'break' in the road as it would route to J10 and then back again. It looks as if there is an error in the end data of one of the road segments.

I have reported it to TT.

Thanks Richard,

Glad t know its no just me, though this error does seem obscure as it affects only certain map/device combos.

Shocked Wow, bit late I know, but my 700 does this too. It hates M4 J11, might take me into Reading, without crashing, but its very likey to crash trying to get back out.
Thought my 700 was failing

Hi Stecha,

I do know what you mean - I thought my TomTom was broken for a while.

This error has been reported to TomTom and they acknowledged it was an issue. It is now just a case of waiting until the fix makes it into the map release.

I see v920 came out this week but don't know if that fix made the cut. Will be installing new map over the weekend to test it.

I just had this problem today with my 910 whilst trying to navigate from Basingstoke to Calcot with Europe map v920.
I thought my 910 had developed a fault, so fired up my backup 710 and this did the same.
Fortunately I had TomTom Navigator for Android (which is awful), but allowed me to navigate to my destination.
I use my 910 frequently all over Europe and I’ve never experienced this problem, has the fault been fixed in the latest/newer maps?
