I finally took the plunge and got a Garmin nulink 2390 as was sick of the constant issues i was having with my 3rd tomtom live device.

So far I'm happy, but do miss some of the features of the tomtom (mainly how things are displayed)

But how do you load custom poi onto the device and anyone know when the camera database will become compatible with the device

What makes you say the PGPSW database isn't compatible?

Hi Paul,

I've got the camera's installed - put them onto a 2gb MicroSD using the POI Loader.

The poi loader will only convert the mp3 files, but it seems that the nulink will not play these when approaching a camera, unless i need to make some other changes

update: found this post Pocket GPS World Database - Garmin NuLink 2390 and downloaded the sox files and placed in the poi loader folder

still working out how to get the audio working for it instead of the beeps

See this thread for tips on using the WAV file version if your unit doesnt support MP3. You'll also need the sox.exe file as detailed in that thread.

just another update

using the speed zoned complete with wav files, creates a file of 19.2mb for the poi

transferred this to the device and it's now showing the poi on the screen and also some spoken alerts for some cameras but not all.

for the ones it notifies about these can be quite a distance from the actual camera (noticed upto 1/2 mile away) - it will report the first camera in a sequence and then nothing for the rest of them..

These issues could be a cause of the simulator, but I won't know until monday if this is the same in real-time during a trip.

update: not sure it my pc having a day-off but the link just goes to another forum not an actually thread Sad

I'm off for a drive shortly so going to give it a test, hope there some cameras on the route

update: this seems to be working - i'm just looking at using camera manager to create directional warnings as i've noticed that in some areas it is advertising the speed for the other side of the motorway.

I've got another test tomorrow where i'll be going a different way so will see how that picks up as well

How big ?

I've just run POILoader and created a GPI file from the Speed Zoned Complete and it is 7,197Kb

This includes all cameras including BMP and WAV but not the PMobiles

if i use the standard download uk zoned complete using wav with chime, this is a 17.3mb download

if i use the standard download uk zone complete using wav without chime, this is a 9.6mb download

If I could get mp3 audio working then it would reduce the size by quite a bit, but all that happens is you just get the standard beeps Sad

i've also been advised by garmin the best image for icons is 16x16 @ 16/32 bitmap

The difference in file sizes is easily explained.
If each warning file without chimes consists of roughly three seconds of speech and each one with a chime consists of three seconds of "bongs" and then three seconds of speech, then the second ones will be twice the size. (a wav file is uncompressed audio, so every second takes the same amount of storage space whether it is quiet, loud or just silence)

Does the file size matter at all?
The whole package is very small compared to a map or a TTS navigation voice, so unless your unit is really cramped for space, I wouldn't worry about it.

Those 16x16 pixel icons sound very small. Even TomTom (who don't often ADD features) are expanding support from 22x22 to 24x24 and even larger icons.

nope the size doesn't matter, it just getting the right setting for me, which is trial and error as performing some tests at home using the simulated route

the wav files work in some situations up to the first camera in a mobile safety zone, then after that it uses the standard garmin beeps

in regards to the bitmaps for poi this is what i asked Garmin

been messing with the different size images and the best is 22x22 on the nulink - i created a 44x44 bitmap and it only showed the top left quarter quarter of image

for a 16x16 it didn't display it most of the time and when it did it was tiny

Very interested to see this topic - I don't suppose you could help and put an 'Idiot's Guide' to getting the database onto a 2390?
I have POI loader ready - have used in the past to load onto previous units, but they didn't need the tweaking that the 2390 seems to require!
I'm not the most tech savvy of people and don't really want to screw up the 2390!!
