UK government Treasury minister Danny Alexander has written to the Scottish government's Transport Secretary Keith Brown calling the installation of speed cameras along the A9 between Dunblane and Inverness in Scotland a "knee-jerk decision".

The average speed cameras will be installed on the single carriageway preceding the proposed dualling of the stretch of road which will not be finished until 2025.

Lib Dem MP Alexander says he wants to see evidence that the cameras would help stop accidents. He commented, "I'd like to see the full assessment of all the options for road safety improvements published, so we can all see how the average speed proposal compared to other options which I presume were on the table, like a more targeted approach."

A spokesman for Keith Brown responded by accusing the minister of hypocrisy: "This is the height of hypocrisy from Danny Alexander, given the Lib Dems' utter failure to commit to dualling the A9 during the years they were in office at Holyrood."

The average speed cameras are due to be in operation by summer 2014.

Holyrood ministers say that the A9 Safety Group "reviewed a detailed evidence base of the accident history and speed profiles of the route" before deciding the cameras should be installed.

And being part of the Coalition he should know a knee jerk reaction when he sees one. Very Happy

Given Danny Alexander is a Scottish MP, I'm surprised he doesn't know of the statistics covering the reduction in accidents on the A77.
Given that they are talking about the A9, I'm not sure what the relevance of the A77 is

The A77 Average Speed zones were introduced to reduce the number of accidents caused by car drivers attempting to get past the long chains of lorries that built up on this road, similar to those on the A9. The A77 is the main road from the Central Belt to the Ferry Ports for Northern Ireland and carry a huge amount of road freight.

Do you happen to know where/if the stats have been published? A significant increase in safety would make up for the frustration caused by the cameras, when the road is empty.

Sadly, the introduction of these zones will have no affect on the number of foreign drivers who end up driving on the wrong side of the road!

What's a Westminster MP doing interfering in Scottish decisions?

What makes Mr. Alexander think he knows what he is talking about? Is his reaction not a jerk of the knee since he obviously has reacted without asking those who decided to put it in.

When you know how long it takes to plan and pass these schemes there can be no hint of a knee jerk.
