Can some explain to me what is the difference between Garmin Digital traffic and TT HD traffic, that's if there is any difference.
Are they both real time traffic updates?
Cheers

Very little actual technical info there!
TomTom's HD Traffic is explained in a pdf document downloadable from here:
http://www.tomtom.com/lib/doc/download/HDT_White_Paper.pdf
Basically, as well as all the normal traffic news sources, it also uses "probe data" which is anonymous location data from every connected TomTom AND ALSO every ordinary Vodaphone phone user on the roads.
I believe TT have that patented, so I don; know what (if any) alternative system Garmin uses to complement the normal news sources. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

The Garmin also is supposed to use the mobile phone users on the roads. I think the bit that is proprietary is the more accurate feedback of TomTom units with precise GPS positioning fed back into the network. But the use of that is dependent on a high number of TomTom units with active traffic enabled.
Interestingly TomTom seems to be edging away slightly from the units with built-in SIM cards. They do have the 5000/6000 models released this year, but lower models including the SIM card in previous years, whereas now there are more offering using your mobile phone for data.
The advantage of the Garmin method is continuous real-time update. So that TomTom doesn't have to pay too much data charges to Vodafone, it is every 3 minutes if I recall. However you need DAB coverage for Garmin's which I don't know how good that is in parts of the UK. |
