I am very happy with Tomtom3 and my dell axim x5. But one thing really niggles me. I thought when you start entering a town or address, after you have put the first few letters in, it should suggest places for you.
But it seems you have to put the whole word in and wait for ages for it to find it.
Is this because I have loaded the whole UK map onto the CF card? |

I think it's rather because of the Axim X5 - there were some messages on various forums that it's not the fastest machine, and even gets outperformed by 200 MHz machines. _________________ Lutz

The speed of your CF or SD card will affect the lookup time as well. If you have a slow/old card, replacing it can make a big difference.
There is lots of info in these forums on what constitutes a good/bad card. |

I had incredibly slow lookup on my 2210 with a Sandisk SD card. I put the maps onto my CF card and it's instantaneous now. |

If most of your usage is in a small area, loading and using a sectional map (rather than - or, indeed, as well as the entire Great Britain map) will help, as there's less data to search through.
Make sure that you're using the latest version of Navigator as well - currently Navigator 3.03, or 3.05T if you have a traffic subscription. There's various optimisations in the address lookup in 3.03 onwards - though the change is more to do with returning sensible results than performance.
The final thought is that your memory card may be fragmented - if so, you've three options:- defragment the card (either using a Pocket PC programme, or on your PC using a card reader)
- copy off all the data, erase the card, copy it all back again (best to copy back the data that changes the least frequently first to prevent future fragmentation)
- copy off all the data, reformat the card, copy it back again (again, best to copy back the data that changes the least frequently first

Sandisk SD cards - many of them perform appallingly (that includes the Ultra II products). If you want to use SD, you're best avoiding Sandisk cards and all rebadges thereof (which can be tricky, as so many brands are rebadged Sandisk).
If anyone posts the markings from the back of their SD card, I'll have a go at identifying the manufacturer, though I can't identify all possible marking styles.

As I mentioned above my Sandisk card was very bad for TomTom, but it works with no probs in my digital camera, even when doing intensive stuff like burst shots and taking movie clips. |

That sounds like a common finding, nej - Sandisk SD cards don't get on in Pocket PCs and other PDAs, but work well in digital cameras and similar.
Ian - it's good to be back - I'll probably be in and out over the next few weeks, but I'm back :D

That might explain it then. I'm using a Sandisk Ultra 256MB CF card |

You shouldn't really have a problem with Compact Flash. they are generally faster and more reliable than their SD equivalent.
It is mainly Sandisk SD cards that give the problems.
However, if you have access to a non-Sandisk card CF or SD you can try it out and at least eliminate the card being the problem. _________________ Ian.

My Sandisk CF card is noticably slower than my Lexar 32x SD card. I have just ordered a Sandisk Ultra II CF card which is supposed to be 66x. I will let you know the results. Let's hope I have not wasted my money!!
