It's about the way iOS accesses data. It might help to explain what's going on...

Most apps in the study were downloaded from Apple's App Store and access the same type of information on unlocked, jailbroken, phones and on locked phones, said Yuvraj Agarwal, a research scientist in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego, who co-authored the study with fellow researcher Malcolm Hall. Agarwal will present the findings at ACM MobiSys, the premier mobile systems conference, which takes place June 25 to 28 in Taipei, Taiwan.
The findings suggest that although Apple's App Store no longer accepts new apps or app updates that access the unique identifier as of March of this year, many apps can still get a hold of that information. The unique identifier allows app vendors and advertisers to track users' behaviors across all the different apps on their devices, including iPhones, iPads and iPods. In addition, some apps can associate the unique identifier with the user's email and other personal information. |

Very interesting, Apple certainly seems to be losing it's way. Personally I know several through and through Apple Fan boys who have dumped their iphones for Galaxy S4s and it would appear these are not isolated.
Not only does IOS7 look horrible yet again Apple are removing the ability for people to do what they want with their phones.
Maybe it is the time to swap?

My problem is I moved from a Nokia steam phone to iPhone, so I was mega impressed. Now it's the question What is as good as or better than iPhone and can I go there with my micro SIM?

There's also 3-4 months to get something sorted too... Plus, you don't have to upgrade to iOS 7...

Sticking to iOS6 is not an option MaFt...
I assume my Subscription is linked to my iPhone's UDID so I am not able to share my login details with others and that is your way to control "piracy"...
Would it be possible for you to make changes in your server so for example the weekly database update can only be downloaded from my account a maximum of 1/2/3 times per week??? |

Oh please NO!!! I download regularly whenever I get the urge - normally EVERY DAY as I leave home but also often whilst I'm many miles away and keen to check I have the latest data when I see new roadworks on the horizon.

The main issue we have is that with the current version Apple reused to let us use the auto-renewing subscriptions. This meant we had to create our own system to recognise users and their devices. Initially we used the UDID - which Apple then disallowed. So we moved to using a hash of the MAC address and a few other bits - like most other developers who needed to identify a specific device.
However, they have now blocked the use of the MAC address in iOS leaving us without an easy way to manage subscriptions... There is an alternative they suggest to use though to identify the device - however, if the app is removed and reinstalled then a new 'unique' ID is generated. So we can recognise an installation of an app but still not the device/user.
This wouldn't be an issue really if Apple hadn't forced us, because we offer a subscription (for which we cannot use Apple's subscription service), to give a free 7 day trial to all new users. This is something that Apple do automatically for their own auto-renewing subscriptions - but they wouldn't let us use that - so we had to make our own system. The Apple subscription handles the account data because it uses the user's AppStore credentials as their 'unique user id'. But developers don't have access to this, so how can we 'detect' a user as such?
It is the 7 day trial that is making the app not compatible with iOS7 as we have no way to keep a check on what users have already had their free trial.

Drop the 7 day trial?
I understand its a good selling point but you can cancel an account and then refund if needed?
How many other paid subscription apps offer a free trial?
Unless you offer CamerAlert Lite which gives a six month old fixed camera only database. But then we know the issues with that. |
