Details on how to install on a TomTom Carminat?

Folks,

I've picked up a 3 year old Renault Scenic with built-in TomTom Carminat.

I've followed the speedcam installation instructions and downloaded what appears to be the right speedcam database format... OV2. And the female sounds with a chime as ogg files.

I've put them all on the SD card in the same directory as the map... UK and Ireland I think.

Now comes the problem... I power up the carminat in the Scenic and try to manage the warnings given out by the new speedcam POIs.

I manage to select a POI.. then the carminat gives me one of 4 options.

The first option is some long winded message that talks about a canned message about being so many yards from a petrol pump and so many miles before the next one.

The next option is a shorter version of the above.

The third option talks about using an alert sound.

The fourth option lets me type in text to be spoken.

I chose the 3rd option. I then initially got a small list of alert sounds I could choose from... none of which were the speedcam ones I'd downloaded, so I aborted from that menu and tried again... now it lets me select the alert sound option, but doesn't give me any choice on what sound to use, it just drops back to a higher level menu. Same for all the other speedcam POIs.

This doesn't seem to match the installation instructions given here.

Is it automagically matching up the name of the POI and the .ogg file?

It didn't let me do anything about the POI being on a route either. That option never appeared.

Has anybody installed the speedcam database on a carminat? If so, can you describe how you did it please

I have the cameras on my Carminat.

Installation is EXACTLY the same as for a TomTom PND. You should reach a point (in that third option) where it asks "Is this the sound you want to use?" and it doesn't make a sound, BUT you must answer YES. I'm assuming you answered NO, which is the wrong answer. It will then automatically select the OGG warning downloaded with the cameras. And it will then go on for you to select distances and on route.

Make sure you have selected a warning sound set which includes pMobiles if you have downloaded pMobile files of cameras - if you have pMobile cameras, but no corresponding OGG file, it goes pear-shaped.

The problem is... the 3rd sound option is ticked by default, and the first time I clicked done, it popped up a small list of sounds... but after that it just drops back to the 'manage alerts' menu with no indication that anything has been done. I suspect I've broken carminat in some way

Yup, in the folder that contains the .ov2 and .bmp files, there are also the .ogg files.

I doubt it. Go out and sit in the car like a geek and try the demo mode past a camera site.

In case you don't know, select Navigate to, set a route, then when it finishes select Details and Demo and see if you get camera warnings - pity you can't do this with Carminat SD card in the computer.

This test route will go past two 30mph cameras....

OK, went for a test run. No sounds.

So went back and looked at the manage alerts for pois section and found that none of the pocket gps poi's had a loudspeaker icon next to them. Even though I'd clicked on the 'use an alert' option.

I then went in and added a written alert to each one. like 'gatso 20' etc. That seemed to get further through the menu system and asked me whether I wanted the sound when I wasn't routing.

I now see loudspeaker icons against all the pocket gps pois. It's too late to drive out again tonight, but will try again tomorrow.

I suspect that in some way the tom tom software is breaking when I ask it to find a sound for the poi and not registering the alert at all.

Edit: ooh, didn't know about the demo option. Will go and try that

Yup, my fault, I only skimmed dennis' message on the iPhone and didn't see the demo/test thing until I got back from driving the mrs. about

I've just tried a demo to a red light poi and the satnav said 'red light', using the built-in speech that comes with the carminat.

I think, as it works, I'll go and change all the other pocket gps poi's to use the built in speech for consistancy and remove the .ogg files.

So obviously it is seeing the POIs. So you've got the setup wrong. The voice warnings are so much better (and save a real bunch of typing) that you'd be better getting the setup right...

No need to delete the OGG files, save them, and try again another time.

Thanks Denis. Being able to select the right ogg file was the way I wanted to do it originally... however, I think there is a bug in the tomtom software in that when I select the 3rd option of providing an alert, I just get bounced back to the main alert menu without being shown any choice of which audio file to use or whether to show it on a route or not.

The first time I tried it, I got a brief list of different alerts... none were the pockeet gps .ogg files which were in the same directory and named correctly as your example. After that... I don't even get the list... it just seems to crash back to the menu.

I don't get the prompt whether it is the sound or not. The satnav just immediately crashes back to the list of pois to alert on, and doesn't associate any sound with that poi.
