Wow - beautiful unit. A really step change from Garmin. Processing time is noticeably quicker than my 3490.
Haven't tried the digital traffic yet but the display looks great. The only downside (without having tested much yet) is that there are no dashboards meaning you can't get more than two sets of data at a time. One is configurable but a few steps to do this. No configurable buttons (Where to, stop, exit services etc...) on the right hand side.
Changes from version 2.60 to version 2.70:
Corrected issue with Safety Cameras settings checkbox initially appearing deselected.
Enhanced the Arabic speech for street names and natural guidance POIs.
Changes from version 2.50 to version 2.60:
Fixed an issue on the 35x7 that could prevent screen touches from working correctly if the user was touching a large portion of the screen when the device was powered on
Fixed an issue that could sometimes prevent the GPS from acquiring a fix
Unit comes with 8GB storage _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

Do a hard reset and wait for the unit to boot up, then hold down the power off key for 10 secs until the screen shows the "turn device off" message. Hit the red button and wait about 20 - 30 secs and the device will turn itself back on....
I can replicate this many times over but I can't from some of the sub-menus.
The UK version comes with a GTM - 70 traffic receiver which I've not read about before. _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

Another update from Garmin today - up to Firmware 2.80 for their 2013 Premium model range.
Changes from version 2.70 to version 2.80:
Fixed an issue that prevented the device from booting up due to the presence of empty or corrupt GLX files.
Changes from version 2.60 to version 2.70:
Corrected issue with Safety Cameras settings checkbox initially appearing deselected.

Any more thoughts / views on the unit - played with it in store at Halfords this week, and seems really nice touches, great keyboard, like the "stay in the right two lanes" style of guidance, but found little Active Lane Guidance in the areas I tested it - some of which had it on older Navigon units, which i found odd
What does the unit's screen work like in direct sun, like we've been enjoying this week?
And finally - if you have time - how does the traffic features work in practice? _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

The 3598 is step up from the 3490 LMT which was my previous model. The display is on a par with the 3490 / 3590 series in terms of readability in sunlight.
I like having the street name at the bottom of the screen although you do have to sacrifice the choice of dashboards with more route info and there is no "button" display - green button / grey button for receiving traffic etc...
The digital traffic seems to work much better than the previous RDS traffic info and is much more accurate. It has a much better coverage and will usually pop up within 2 or 3 minutes of switching on. The unit gives you the option of routing around the traffic or tells you "traffic ahead but to stay on route" as it is the fastest. The downside for me is the pop up boxes for traffic, weather, trip info etc.. which show up on the right hand side of the screen and have to be manually closed by pressing "x" - not a major issue but something to be aware of.
The Real traffic is a nice feature, but limited so far to turn left/right at "Roundabout or Traffic Lights" rather than the McDonalds, Starbucks etc.. which Garmin claim - again a matter of time before this becomes more commonplace.
There aren't many examples of the Active Lane guidance yet - mainly M25 with a few noted on the M40, M6, M5. It will be similar to junction view which took around 3 or 4 map updates to become comprehensive. _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

Got my shiny new 3598 on Saturday.. Certainly a thing of beauty with excellent build quality. Also invested in the "bean bag" official mount which puts the device more readily in reach from the drivers seat (especially in some rental cars with MPV style cabin).
Just getting used to the menu structures now, I think it's going to take me a while to get proficient as I've been a loyal TomTom supporter for some years now. I think it's good to have a change occasionally in any case, been a few bug bears with the TT devices so I think it's time to se what the competition has to offer.
The display is lovely and crisp. The interface buttons are a good size, which is something that's annoyed me in the past on some of the TT menus, often selecting the wrong destination from a list as they are too small...
Voice command seems pretty good but lets wait to see how it gets on under real driving conditions before making a proper judgement!
Disconnecting the device from the MacBook has caused me some frustration as it seems to try to remount immediately after I disconnect and then the MacBook complains that the device is still connected when I pull the cable. Seem to have got that one sussed now, I wait for the Garmin display to go black after ejecting from Finder window and then pull the cable immediately, seems to work but I would prefer it it didn't keep trying to connect immediately (all the apps associated were closed).
Will be interesting to see how good the Digital Traffic offering is compared to the TT HD Live which was one of the strong points on the TT for me, but I wasn't prepared to shell out yearly such large amounts for the Live and Map updates. I think newer models have this cracked now.

P.S. How do you do the "Hard Reset" on the Garmin? _________________ "A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible"

Thanks for the feedback - cannot decide between a new TomTom (preference) or the 3597 - I usually like the Garmins, but hate their routing (country lane and town centre driving where as my TomToms route me around this much of the time
Anyone know if there is a new (improved?) routing engine on the new line up - ie. not just faster _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

As far as I know the routing engine is the same as the Nuvi 2012 line-up.
Garmin have improved things in the last few years, Traffic Trends has made a big difference to many "town centre diversions" and there is also the option to exclude a "detour" box whereby you can avoid certain areas. _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

Just purchased the nuvi 3598. Looks to be a good machine. I have created some routes and waypoints in basecamp. I have downloaded these to the sat nav. I can only see the waypoints (as favourites) on the device, I cannot see the actual routes. Is there a way I can see the routes on the device or have I got to set them up manually?
