Hi
I have a Humminbird 778 sonar (fish-finder) that is GPS capable, yet the antenna is over a hundred bucks. I also got a new quad and need a handheld unit that does basic geocaching.
I've read from others that they've used a Garmin GPSmap 76 and a Humminbird GPS cable only, and used the Garmin as an antenna.
Here is the post

I have a Humminbird 778c which is an external GPS unit.
I use the cable from humminbird (AS-HHGPS) wired to a old garmin cable
that I cut the RS232 end off, and set the garmin to NMEA out.
This feeds the GPS info to the bird.
This way the Garmin is a replacement for the $100+ GPS antenna.
This lets me mark waypoints on the humminbird, show speed, etc
You have to watch the newer GPS units, They use usb or bluetooth as the
interface to a computer instead of RS232 as in the old days. (Garmin
GPSmap 76 units has both USB and RS232) Also the fishfinder needs GPS
features and the same interface as the handheld GPS
Ideally I'd like to find a cheap unit that does both, since I don't need advanced features, or color screens. Yet if I can find a 'Antenna unit' for cheap enough, I might get a newer $200ish handheld for Geocaching.
I've even considered if just a good Handheld would be better then the Humminbird GPS.
If anyone can give me makes and models of capable 'Antenna units', since I can only find $130 GPSmap 76's. I'd appreciate it. Or general advice that might help me out, both would be greatly appreciated.

Try search for a Garmin GPS-35HVS as this should do what you want for the fishing side, e-bay they can be found quite cheap (circa 99P if you check Here as that has a 232 output - Mike
