|
|
hello all.
not sure if this is a battery problem or even a problem at all. if i dont use my tomtom go 300 for 3 or 4 days, then it wont switch on again until i have it on charge for about 15 minutes. then to get it to switch on i have to hold down the power button for about 5 secs, and it looks like it is re-booting (with a progress bar) and the tomtom logo appears. everything then works fine.
this happens if i leave it in a fully charged state or not.
but, when it is fully charged, i get about 5 hours continous use out of the battery, which implies that the battery is good.
is this normal?
thanks. _________________ TOMTOM GO 300 |

Holding down the Button for 3-5 seconds is not unusual. It's to save inadvertent switch on. If the battery is flat, it will have to do a Full Reboot, which takes a little longer.
I would not have expected the battery to drain in less than a week. When these things used to be talked about I think it was 2-3 weeks.
I would expect about 5 hours use on a full charge.
From your description I would say that the battery is good, but an internal component is drawing too much current. _________________ Richard

thanks for the reply.
switched it on today after a couple of days and it came on ok, showing full battery. its a minor irritation rather than a huge problem, so i'll live with it for the moment.

Well, I still have my TomTom Go 300 6 years on. I thought I'd have a go at replacing the battery with a higher capacity one, although to be fair the original battery was still working pretty well.
After replacing the battery, the unit is working fine but I still have the existing problem with the battery going flat after a couple of days, even when it is switched off (and the sd card removed for good measure).
I have just acquired a genuine TomTom wall charger. My next question is - for long-term battery life is it better to keep the unit on charge all the time, or keep re-charging it every few days after the battery has gone flat, or not worry about it and just let the unit sit for months on end with a completely flat battery and then charge it when I need to use it? To be honest, the original battery seems to have lasted pretty well adopting the last method.
Thanks. _________________ TOMTOM GO 300 |

Oh, if only TomTom had continued making good units after they changed from the 300 series.
If you've kept it going for 6 years, you don't need any advice from me. Sounds like the second method does well enough for you. _________________ Dennis

It still uses the battery.
If you charge the battery up, and then do a 'pin-in-the-hole' reset, the unit switches off totally. The battery will last much longer (possibly several months), depending on the condition of the battery.
When starting again you will get the drum roll re-boot, and the cold-start GPS fix wait.
The batteries have a dislike for regularly going 'flat' and being 'cycled'. Much better to keep it charged. Long term storage is suggested at about 65% charge, so starting at 100% will have no ill effects. _________________ Richard

Thanks for the replies. The TomTom Go 300 does everything I want it to, so I have never really felt the need to replace it.

I was aware that the unit was in some sort of "standby" mode when switched off normally, but was under the impression that removing the SD card actually switched it off completely as you get the drum roll and longer boot time if you do this.
I hadn't heard about the reset pin method. I am going to try this out as I only tend to use the TomTom occasionally and do leave it in the desk drawer for months on end sometimes. How exactly do you do the reset please?

Just press the button inside the tiny hole with a suitable blunt-ended pin for half a second or so. An unfolded paper-clip is perfect for the job. Try not to use anything with a sharp point, as it will eventually damage the switch inside. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

This is with the unit switched on, right? Then it will turn off?
Thanks. _________________ TOMTOM GO 300 |

Yes, that's right.
Though you can do it when it's switched off too, as it's normally only "sleeping". _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

I've tried this and the unit turns off as soon as the pin is pressed which is fine. Unfortunately the battery still goes flat after less than 24 hours, even though the unit is obviously fully off. I assume there must be a permanent short on the battery somehow (and always has been). The strange thing is the battery life with the unit in operation is still good - several hours at least, although I haven't tested it to the death. I shall just carry on using it as before until such a time as it dies completely.
Thanks for the help. _________________ TOMTOM GO 300 |
