Hi!
A friend of me has a simple navigation App from pocketgpsworld.com on his iPhone 4. The App shows you in a simple way for example the actual speed.
Tried in the ICE, the german high speed train, I was surprised by getting any signal and by measuring the correct speed. Because of special windows, there is technically no way to get signals from GPS (you cannot use e.g. garmin gps tools to get the position or actual speed).
So my question is what signals does this App use for positioning? Is it a combination of gps and/or mobile network?

How are the windows special? GPS works OK on the French TGV.
If you are talking about the CamerAlert app, then it can use either GPS or mobile network for location purposes.

It uses Apple's location API. I.e. it can use wifi, cell and gps to get it's location.

The ICE has metal evaporated windows. The french TGV hasn`t this feature so gps receiver work fine.. |

Current GPS receivers are so sensitive it takes more than a microscopically thin window coating to prevent adequately strong GPS signals getting through to them. Even 6 years ago while I was testing a Qstarz 818 I found that both GPS and Bluetooth signals had no trouble penetrating to a GPS receiver inside a closed biscuit tin.

How the hell did you get inside the biscuit tin to see what was going on?

That's where the bluetooth came in... connected to a Nokia N70 (no built in GPS), outside the box, running TomTom 5.
