|
|
I emailed Tomtom and asked them where i could get maps of USA.
This is the response I got:
"Thank you for your E-mail to TomTom Customer Support.
The digital map data for US is not of a quality that is acceptable to TomTom at this time. Should this change however, then TomTom is always investigating new opportunities."
Erm...?
You can buy Tomtom maps from the USA website?
That sounds bizaare.
I was planning to use my Tomtom software in the US.
But it seems as though I can't now???
Any comments?

Both statements are true ;-)
You can buy the maps at tomtomusa.com , and yes, they are of uhm, suboptimal quality. But the which ones aren't? It also pretty much depends on the region , map quaility fluctuates widely throughout the US. Texas is pretty decent, east coast is said to be bad. Let's hope that the next version of TomTom in the US will have much updated TeleAtlas maps.
Be aware that here in the US we are still using TomTom 2.24, so you will have to dual install if you currently use TTN3. _________________ Lutz

be that as it may be... but i think it's odd for tomtom to flatly reject their own product that is still sold!? _________________ iPaq 3870

yes, that's indeed odd. I'd guess it's just the ever present support team turnaround, and the person you talked to wasn't up to date yet. _________________ Lutz

Well what would you want him/her to say,
That US maps are brilliant, so then when you find that they are not acceptable quality, you then accuse TomTom of of selling inferior goods.
I say well done TomTom, for telling the TRUTH |

delboy... are you related to tomtom by any chance? ;)
i didn't mean to upset you.
i agree with you.
well done tomtom for telling the truth.
erm... but are they now going to shut down their operations in the usa?
do they have a large warning sign on tomtomusa.com warning of the poor quality of their maps? (maybe they do!)
imagine all the unsuspecting buyers of their maps in the usa - poor souls!
don't get me wrong... i love tomtom! their software is brilliant.
whatdya say to that? _________________ iPaq 3870

I'm a little concerned now myself! I have recently purchased the US maps for my trip to california next month. What am I likely to find, that TomTom doesn't get me to where I want to go or that it will just be a strange route ? |

You will see that the maps are mostly ok. You will see some smallissues in areas that have recently transformed. New developments, new highways, new intersections etc.
Regardless TomTom will get you to your location. And even if it choses a suboptimal route, you will stil get there. There's no chance you could get lost beyond recovery. _________________ Lutz
