We're aware of the issues affecting the site this evening and are investigating, apologies, we're getting some more 5p's for the meter. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Since my last post at 7.15PM today (maybe above), I've been to the download page for the speed cams.
Not sure if this is a side effect of the site's problems or the cause, but my browser started multiple downloads at the same time. |

Not sure why but yesterday evening (around 9pm) I tried to submit some sightings but the website just stopped responding after the first submission. Tried FF and IE. Other websites were fine.
Tried this morning at 8am and all was OK. |

Indeed, the cause was yet another attack on our server. We've been blocking the source IP addresses and are taking further steps to harden our server against these attacks including the installation of software that will automatically block malicious traffic at the firewall.
We can't do much more in the short term other than hope they move on to pastures new. But, long term, we're planning a move to a bigger, faster server and will take that opportunity to bolster our systems as far as possible.
Unfortunately, when any server is the victim of a concerted, distributed attack, the end result is all the incoming connections get swamped and legitimate traffic can't get through. It's a royal pain in the backside. _________________ Darren Griffin |

We know, we're doing all we can but there isn't a magic wand for this issue, sadly. _________________ Darren Griffin |

There was some posts at one stage that seemed to indicate that it was the 'average' site user that saw the slowing down of the site before the people who were more involved in running it. I'm under the illusion that by posting about the slowing down I'm giving the site management some helpful early warning? If I'm coming across as less than helpful, then I'm happy to be told so, and will shut up. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Not at all. Just that, at the moment, we're all watching the site with a keen eye given the number of attacks we've had of late.
We've now implemented some defensive software which we're hoping will help reduce the severity of the affects of any future attacks. Time will tell. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes, I had some slow-down around that time too however it recovered itself without any manual intervention. The software we installed 'learns' so I'm assuming the slow down was while it was learning, the attack got blocked/stopped and we came back to normal again.
