|

Darren has just started out on his 26 mile run through the streets of London. The London Marathon is the culmination of many months of hard training.
We all wish Darren the best in this huge effort in support of the Autism Society. Typically being a geeky guy he is loaded down with tech, and one of these items is GPS tracking. If you wish to track his progress around the course log on to http://www.wheremi.pro/track?key=1aef9Sdc&ref=600&fs=.

If you put his number (2676) in here it shows he passed the half-way point in a time of 03:05:18. _________________ Anita

Well done Darren. A shame the live tracking didn't work, but a good effort. Thanks to Anita for tracking down the Virgin tracking link. Would be interested to know how that site tracks and logs the runners. Guess cameras read the numbers a bit like Average Speed Cams, but I would think its much more of a challenge technologically as the numbers are not necessarily on a flat surface and will not be traveling at a uniform velocity where as car number plates are flat and are traveling at a constant distance above the ground (no jiggling about to put it another way!). |

If a fairly cheap digital camera can fairly successfully do face recognition on a face anywhere in the frame, I'm sure that reading big, bold numbers is a pretty trivial challenge but not one that I personally am very good at.
@Darren. Well done. I have trouble with 26 yards ![Rolling Eyes](modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif) |

So much for the tracking eh! Not 100% sure what happened but I think the lack of data at the start point was the issue. Although other runners were making calls I was unable to call my wife or send a text. So I'm blaming T-Mobile.
The battery was fine and the iPhone and app remained active all the way but once I crossed the finish line I had to reboot the phone to get any data or SMS message services working. And if the phone couldn't send data, the tracking was doomed to failure
Anyway, I made it. It was an amazing experience but it was agony. I was fine until about 18-miles and then it started hurting - badly! The last 6 miles seemed to go on forever.
Unsurprisingly I'm hobbling, have a very impressive blister across the ball of one foot and lost a toenail on the other. But I finished and raised a fantastic amount for the National Autistic Society.
And would I do it again? Ask me next week ![Wink](modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ Darren Griffin |

Congratulations and my sincere admiration.
I've not had any of the health issues you've faced recently, but couldn't take on a challenge like that.
No way! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
