any clues how i get this device working again ?
When I switch it on I get picture of disk with a white cross on a red circle
its never been backed up and never had a sd card fitted
I assume the internal memory has died, but it appears to access a blank SD card but of course i dont know what to put on it
Please help |

1. Connect to the computer.
2. Make an Explorer, not Home, backup of the unit's contents. See here:
http://www.tomtomforums.com/t17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer-how-restore.html
3. Delete all the loose files in the root of the unit, NO folders or their contents
4. Connect to Home.
5. An application should be offered. Accept and install.
6. Disconnect properly from Home using the Device Disconnect icon on the bottom right of the Home screen.
7. Start up the unit. Any better?
If so.......... make another Explorer backup to a different folder than the first one you made. _________________ David |

Have you ever updated the map since you got the 530 and are you still using the same PC you did any map purchases with, if so the device can be recovered at no cost (assuming it will work with an SD card) - Mike |

I had a similar problem a few months ago and I managed to 'recreate' the entire GO530 from scratch. I think you may have to buy an SD card and a new map, but let's take this step by step.
Does the GO 530 show in "My Computer" as removable storage ?
e.g TT GO ( "x": ) or INTERNAL ( x : ) or something similar ("x" being the drive letter that your computer allocates to it)
If not you could be right that the internal memory has failed.

If you have never made a backup, you may be up a river without a paddle. However, download NavCore 8.351 first from
http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/8.351.go530-go730-go930.CAB-navcore-GO.cab
and install it on a blank, formatted SDHC card. Insert the Sd card into the TT and switch on. We shall worry about the maps later (if it works!) _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I was kind of hoping that if it did work, when you next connected your TT to your PC you may be able to access the TT as an external drive, the maps would miraculously appear and you could copy and paste them to the SD card.
If you have never made a back up, the only maps you have are on your TT and if you cant access the TT either with Windows Explorer or TomTomHome you haven't got any maps.
Have you tried to see what, if anything, is visible if you connect to your computer now that the TT is "working"?. Also try TTHome, let it detect your TT and see if it offers to download your old maps for you. Try coecting to home with the TT already switched on and if that doesn't work try again with it switched off and then switch on whilst connected.
Failing that, a pleading letter to TT customer support may work, hopefully it may fall upon sympathetic ears. If not, you'll need to either buy new maps or a new device. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
